Janée Baugher signs Coördinates of Yes. (Book-signing)

Janee Baugher

Written during a six-week trip through Europe, Coördinates of Yes addresses different ways of seeing. At the core of Coördinates of Yes lies dualism: "Coördinates" refers to place and transience of travel, and "Yes" suggests the mind-set required of both a traveler and a viewer of art. "There's an unusual, and refreshing, sincerity in these poems, from a poet who has stripped herself of cynicism," says David Guterson. "Baugher is keenly observant, almost 'walking on eyes,' while simultaneously aware that 'It is only with one's heart that one can see,'" says Grace Bauer.

Treat Yourself to This Good Read, Says Rick Blackburn.

Leavenworth resident Rick Blackburn reviews "Life Through the Rearview Mirror" by Ed Lincoln

Rick BlackburnLife Through the Rearview Mirror

I have known Ed for twenty-five years and can attest that what he portrays here is the "real deal." Ed is always giving to and serving others, looking for adventure, and being what I refer to as a Renaissance man. His story is filled with the history of Seattle from the 1950's to the present, including tales of the landmark Mustang Ranch and the Pink Toe Truck. What fun to read about his exploits as a youngster, his enjoying a challenge, his looking for his next deal, and his close-knit family life. This is an entrepreneur's book—an insight into how Ed turned an idea into a challenge and then a reality. Those who have enjoyed building, racing or otherwise appreciating classic cars will find this a must-read. I could not put the book down, partly because of my long-time friendship with Ed, but also because it kept me riveted—I was laughing, even crying, often. Treat yourself to this good read!

— Ed Blackburn

I Still Dream About You

I Still Dream About You by Fannie Flagg  $26.00

Beloved Fannie Flagg is back and at her irresistible and hilarious best in I Still Dream About You, a comic mystery romp through the streets of Birmingham, Alabama. Meet Maggie Fortenberry, a still beautiful former Miss Alabama. To others, Maggie's life seems practically perfect—she's lovely, charming, a successful real estate agent, and can fold a napkin in more than forty-eight different and interesting ways. But Maggie has heartbreaking secrets in her past, and through a strange turn of events she discovers, quite by accident, how many of us—dead or alive—have at least one little secret. I Still Dream About You is a wonderful novel that is equal parts southern charm, murder mystery, and Flagg's perfect combination of comedy and old-fashioned wisdom.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand
by Helen Simonson  $15.00

Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart. The Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. When the two are drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, will love triumph over decorum?

"[a] beautiful little love story ... told with skill and humor... refreshing in its optimism and its faith in the transformative possibilities of courtesy and kindness... a gentle read... a powerful moral message... And as for happy endings, it deserves all available prizes," says the New York Times Book Review.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand  $27.00

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. A young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, struggled to a life raft and pulled himself aboard.

Lieutenant Zamperini, former Olympic athlete, now faced thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. The celebrated author of Seabiscuit brings this story to life.

"Unbroken is too much book to hope for: a hell ride of a story in the grip of the one writer who can handle it. Killing sharks with his bare hands...outracing Olympic runners...outwitting one of the most notorious fiends to stalk Japan's POW camps — when it comes to courage, humanity, and impossible adventure, few will ever match "the boy terror of Torrance," and few but the author of Seabicuit could tell his tale with such humanity and dexterity. Laura Hillenbrand has given us a new national treasure," Says Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run.

"You don't have to be a sports fan or a war-history buff to devour this book—you just have to love great storytelling," says Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth (the Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race by Jon Stewart  $27.99

The eagerly awaited new book from the Emmy-winning, Oscar-hosting, Daily Show-anchoring Jon Stewart—the man behind the megaseller America (The Book).

Where do we come from? Who created us? Why are we here? With their trademark wit, irreverence, and intelligence, Stewart and his team will posthumously answer all of life's most hard-hitting questions, completely unburdened by objectivity, journalistic integrity, or even accuracy.

"Like the 'Daily Show' this parody delivers wittily framed absurdities in a sweetly deadpan way," says The New York Times.

"laugh-out-loud, rollicking social satire," says a Publishers Weekly starred review.

Artemis Fowl; The Atlantis Complex by Eoin Colfer  $17.99
Recommended for ages 9-12

Artemis has committed his entire fortune to a project he believes will save the planet and its inhabitants, both human and fairy. Can it be true? Has goodness taken hold of the world's greatest teenage criminal mastermind? Captain Holly Short is unconvinced, and discovers that Artemis is suffering from Atlantis Complex, a psychosis common among guilt-ridden fairies — not humans — and most likely triggered by Artemis's dabbling with fairy magic. Symptoms include obsessive-compulsive behavior, paranoia, multiple personality disorder and, in extreme cases, embarrassing professions of love to a certain feisty LEPrecon fairy.

Unfortunately, Atlantis Complex has struck at the worst possible time. A deadly foe from Holly's past is intent on destroying the actual city of Atlantis. Can Artemis escape the confines of his mind — and the grips of a giant squid — in time to save the underwater metropolis and its fairy inhabitants?

New York Times best-selling author Eoin Colfer delivers a knockout, fast-paced, and hilarious adventure in Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex, the seventh book in the blockbuster series.

Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters

Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters by Barack Obama   $17.99
illustrated by Loren Long

In this tender, beautiful letter to his daughters, President Barack Obama has written a moving tribute to thirteen groundbreaking Americans and the ideals that have shaped our nation. From the artistry of Georgia O'Keeffe, to the courage of Jackie Robinson, to the patriotism of George Washington, President Obama sees the traits of these heroes within his own children, and within all of America's children.

Breathtaking, evocative illustrations by award-winning artist Loren Long at once capture the personalities and achievements of these great Americans and the innocence and promise of childhood.

"President Obama turns toward young Americans with this picture book tribute to 13 men and women—and corresponding qualities of character—that demonstrate the nation's best. Written before he took office, the book directly addresses daughters Sasha and Malia, who appear throughout, joined by young versions of Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Keller, Sitting Bull, ... Neil Armstrong, [Cesar Chavez, George Washington] and the rest--a tangible reminder that every hero, artist, and explorer was once a child... the growing chorus of children faces [in] Long's paintings—by turns majestic, whimsical, and rousing—is highly diverse, both in backgrounds and accomplishments, creating a collective portrait of citizens' inspiration, dedication, and bravery," says Publishers Weekly.

Olivia Goes to Venice

Olivia Goes to Venice by Ian Falconer  $17.99
illustrated by Ian Falconer

"The irrepressible Olivia is back—this time on a trip to Venice that hits the tourist hotspots and allows Olivia to be her precocious porcine best... Caldecott Honor artist Falconer's inventive and droll artwork offers exuberance (and gelato) in nearly every scene, and Olivia's curiosity and strong sense of self remain intact. The contrast between the antic lines of the charcoal and gouache paintings superimposed over gorgeous color photographs provides much hilarity... Falconer's understated text is both witty and subtle; when the gondola emerges from under the Bridge of Sighs, "Olivia sighed." And he remains attuned to the way children think; when Olivia is searched at the airport for weapons, "She was very pleased." The preposterous ending involves Olivia's finding the perfect souvenir ("one of the actual Stones of Venice") and the resulting collapse of a bell tower. This comic sequel is as delightful as its predecessors," says Publishers Weekly.
