Wenatchee native Amanda Coplin speaks on The Orchardist (Presentation)

Amanda Coplin

Set at the beginning of the 20th century in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, where a solitary orchard owner takes in two teenage sisters who are both scared and pregnant. Amanda Coplin weaves a tapestry of solitary souls who come together in the wake of unspeakable cruelty and misfortune. She writes with breathtaking precision and empathy, and in The Orchardist she crafts an astonishing debut novel about a man who disrupts the lonely harmony of an ordered life when he opens his heart and lets the world in.

Christine Smith joins our October Book Buzz

Christine and Jeff Smith

Christine and Jeffrey Smith found the David B tucked behind a breakwater on Lopez Island. The tired old wooden boat, built in 1929, was showing her age. Without much income, they pinned their hopes and sheer will on rebuilding the dying boat. What they thought would be a two-year project, became an eight-year tug-of-war between time and money as they raced to finish rebuilding the David B.

Trent Reedy

Stealing Air at Our Local Schools!

Trent Reedy, an award winning author, will be visiting both Osborne Elementary and Icicle River Middle schools October 9th (please check with the school librarian for the exact times.) He wrote the books Stealing Air and Words in the Dust. Reedy himself is a veteran of the Afganistan war. He uses his experiences to tell his story in his book Words in the Dust. Reedy was instrumental in changing the life of a young afghan girl with a clef palette. The story puts a face behind the people in the news. Reedy was keenly aware of the injustices facing women in that country, especially someone with a deformity. We are honored to have such a distinguished author visit our schools, just in time for Veterans Day.

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison  $23.95

"Listen to me: everything you think you know, every relationship you've ever taken for granted, every plan or possibility you've ever hatched, every conceit or endeavor you've ever concocted, can be stripped from you in an instant. Sooner or later, it will happen. So prepare yourself." — from The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison

Benjamin has lost virtually everything—his wife, his family, his home, his livelihood. With few options, Ben enrolls in a night class called The Fundamentals of Caregiving, where he is instructed in the art of inserting catheters and avoiding liability, about professionalism, and on how to keep physical and emotional distance between client and provider.

But when Ben is assigned to tyrannical nineteen-year-old Trevor, who is in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, he soon discovers that the endless details and service plan checklists have done little to prepare him for the reality of caring for a fiercely stubborn, sexually frustrated adolescent with an ax to grind for the world at large.

Though begun with mutual misgivings, the relationship between Trev and Ben evolves into a close camaraderie, and the traditional boundaries between patient and caregiver begin to blur as they embark on a road trip to visit Trev's ailing father. A series of must-see roadside attractions divert them into an impulsive adventure interrupted by one birth, two arrests, a freakish dust storm, and a six-hundred-mile cat-and-mouse pursuit by a mysterious brown Buick Skylark.

Bursting with energy, this big-hearted and inspired novel ponders life's terrible surprises and the heart's uncanny capacity to mend.

The Bartender's Tale

The Bartender's Tale By Ivan Doig  $27.95

Author of The Whistling Season, This House of Sky and Dancing At The Rascal Fair

Ivan Doig, the great American storyteller, gives us another classic cow town Montana adventure. You can almost hear the sound of cowboy boots scuffing the wood floor, and the acrid smell of stale beer, as you turn the pages.

Doig sets this novel in the familiar town of Gros Ventre, in northern Montana. It is the tale of a bartending single father named Tom, and his precocious 12 year old son Rusty. Their true home is the bar at Medicine Lodge, the chief watering hole in this last refuge town. Change arrives with gale force, in the person of Proxy, a taxi dancer Tom knew back when, and her beatnik daughter. Doig is a master at putting words to feelings, with a western flare. The story is a whirlwind of emotion as Rusty delves into the brew of new love and becoming a man. Tom has his own wild ride trying to be the sole parent in this hobbled together family, and coping with change. Ivan Doig wonderfully captures how the world becomes bigger and the past becomes more complex in the last moments of childhood. His narrative is told through the eyes of a child: the 12-year-old Rusty Harry, now grown to adulthood and casting his mind back to the transformational summer of 1960. The Bartender's Tale works slowly, building up observations such as this one: "People come and go in our lives; that's as old a story as there is. But some of them the heart cries out to keep forever, and that is a fresh saga every time." Pull up a barstool and enjoy the tale.

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies by Ben Macintyre   $26.00

In his celebrated bestsellers Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat, Ben Macintyre told the dazzling true stories of a remarkable WWII double agent and of how the Allies employed a corpse to fool the Nazis and assure a decisive victory. In Double Cross, Macintyre returns with the untold story of the grand final deception of the war and of the extraordinary spies who achieved it.

On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. D-Day was a stunning military accomplishment, but it was also a masterpiece of trickery. Operation Fortitude which enabled the invasion, and implemented the Double Cross system, of German double agents. They succeeded in deceiving the Nazis into believing that the Allies would attack at Norway rather than Normandy. It was the most sophisticated and successful deception operation ever carried out, ensuring that Hitler kept an entire army awaiting a fake invasion, saving thousands of lives, and securing an Allied victory at the most critical juncture in the war.

The story of D-Day has been told from the point of view of the soldiers who fought in it, the tacticians who planned it, and the generals who led it. But this epic event in world history has never before been told from the perspectives of the key individuals in the Double Cross System. These include its director, MI5 handlers, and five spies who formed Double Cross's nucleus: a dashing Serbian playboy, a Polish fighter-pilot, a bisexual Peruvian party girl, a deeply eccentric Spaniard with a diploma in chicken farming, and a volatile Frenchwoman. The D-Day spies were, without question, one of the oddest military units ever assembled, and their success depended on the delicate, dubious relationship between spy and spymaster, both German and British. Their enterprise was saved from catastrophe by a shadowy sixth spy whose heroic sacrifice is revealed here for the first time.

With the same depth of research, eye for the absurd and masterful storytelling that have made Ben Macintyre an international bestseller Double Cross is a captivating narrative of the spies who wove a web so intricate it ensnared Hitler's army and carried thousands of D-Day troops across the Channel in safety.

Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt

Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt By Chris Hedges, illustrated by Joe Sacco  $28.00

A painfully bleak look at the festering sores of Americas sacrifice zones, those areas that people, and the environment have been exploited, in the name of maximized profits, and technological advancement. Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist Joe Sacco set out to take a look at the catastrophic results. They wanted to show in words and drawings what life looks like in places where the marketplace rules without constraints, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is the searing account of their travels. The book starts in the western plains, where Native Americans were sacrificed in the race for land. It moves to the old manufacturing centers that fueled the industrial revolution, but now lie in decay. Hedges then tackles American laborers in the nation's produce fields. He ends the book in Zuccotti Park where a new generation revolts against a corporate state that has handed to the young an economic, political, cultural and environmental catastrophe. Chris Hedges has a great capacity for evoking the misery and hopelessness that is increasingly common in this country. This is often a depressing book—but it is strongly based in reality, and informative. It is an important wake up call.
