Unemployed Philosophers Guild - Banned Book Mug

About the Mugs
Made by the Unemployed Philosophers Guild.

The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are shrouded in mystery.

Some accounts trace the Guild's birth to Athens in the latter half of the 4th century BCE. Allegedly, several lesser philosophers grew weary of the endless Socratic dialogue endemic in their trade and turned to crafting household implements and playthings. (Hence the assertions that Socrates quaffed his hemlock poison from a Guild-designed chalice, though vigorous debate surrounds the question of whether it was a "disappearing" chalice.)

Unemployed Philosophers Guild - Cheshire Cat Mug

Others argue that the UPG dates from the High Middle Ages, when the Philosophers Guild entered the world of commerce by selling bawdy pamphlets to pilgrims facing long lines for the restroom. Business boomed until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned the publications. Not surprisingly, this led to increased sales, even as half our membership was burned at the stake.

More recently, revisionist historians have pinpointed the birth of the Guild to the time it was still cool to live in New York City's Lower East Side. Two brothers turned their inner creativity and love of paying rent towards fulfilling the people's needs for finger puppets, warm slippers, coffee cups, and cracking up at stuff.

The Yellow Birds

The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers  $14.99

The Yellow Birds is the harrowing story of two young soldiers trying to stay alive in the Iraq war. The reader is transported to the front lines in this close-up account of war. Sun, heat, sand, and shade lull you into warmth and security—till the bullets come. Powers writes with a rawness that will pummel you with the sights, smells, trauma and decay of war. There is no escape from the blunt reality of death and the numbness felt by survivors. Powers ensures that we, too, are properly haunted with the emotional and physical terror of war. Powers uses his own experiences in the Iraq war to add depth and reality to his novel.

Yellow Birds is a powerful account of friendship and loss. In Al Tafar, Iraq, twenty-one-year old Private Bartle and eighteen-year-old Private Murphy cling to life as their platoon launches a bloody battle for the city. Bound together since basic training when Bartle makes a promise to bring Murphy safely home, the two have been dropped into a war neither is prepared for. In the endless days that follow, the two young soldiers do everything to protect each other from the forces that press in on every side: the insurgents, physical fatigue, and the mental stress that comes from constant danger. They quickly develop an apparent indifference and callousness to the death and destruction around them, which is vital for their psychological survival.

As a result of his experiences, Murphy becomes increasingly unmoored from the hazy nightmare around him until he finally cracks. Eventually, he too becomes a victim of the war, and Bartle goes home to face the consequences of a cover up in which he'd participated. In a splintered narrative that shifts back and forth in time—mirroring the disintegration of Bartle's own sanity, the young man fights both to tell and to remember the truth about his friend's death.

Praise

"...a remarkable first novel, one that stands with Tim O'Brien's enduring Vietnam book, The Things They Carried, as a classic of contemporary war fiction. The Yellow Birds is brilliantly observed and deeply affecting: at once a freshly imagined story about a soldier's coming of age, a harrowing tale about the friendship of two young men trying to stay alive on the battlefield in Iraq, and a philosophical parable about the loss of innocence and the uses of memory. Its depiction of war has the surreal kick of Mr. O'Brien's 1978 novel, Going After Cacciato, and a poetic pointillism distinctly its own; they combine to sear images into the reader's mind with unusual power." — The New York Times

"Throughout The Yellow Birds, amid the gore and the terror and the boredom, you can hear notes of Powers's work as a poet...more than a little of that rich language would risk turning the novel florid, but Powers rarely oversteps. In the best sections, he moves gracefully between spare, factual description of the soldiers' work to simple, hard-won reflections on the meaning of war...his lacerating honesty never feels false or fails to shock...." — The Washington Post

The Beautiful Mystery

The Beautiful Mystery By Louise Penny  $25.99

Highly acclaimed crime writer Louise Penny sets her brilliant new novel in the silent secrecy of a monastery. Beautiful Mystery is the eighth novel in the Chief Inspector Gamache mystery series. Murderous monks! A missing medieval manuscript! Hidden rooms behind crumbling monastery walls! The Inquisition! The stage is set with an intriguing who done it plot, cleverly concealed clues and suspenseful espionage.

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery." But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover discord beneath the silence. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between. The mystery is solved, revealing truths about human passions and weaknesses while avoiding simple answers. VERDICT this heart-rending tale is a marvelous addition to Penny's acclaimed series. Fans won't be disappointed.

"Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable—the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace." — New York Times

"With enormous empathy for the troubled human soul—and an ending that makes your blood race and your heart break—Penny continues to raise the bar of her splendid series." — People Magazine (Editor's Pick, 4 out of 4 stars)

"...It's a stirring, thought-provoking read, less a matter of whodunit than a relentless questioning of why any of us do anything. The Beautiful Mystery...stands as a powerful literary novel in its own right...." — The Globe and Mail

"An entire mystery novel centering on Gregorian chants (whose curiously hypnotic allure is called the "beautiful mystery")? Yes, indeed, and in the hands of the masterful Penny, the topic proves every bit as able to transfix readers as the chants do their listeners...." — Booklist

How Music Works

How Music Works by David Byrne   $32.00

How Music Works is David Byrne's remarkably inquisitive celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime immersed in. Touching on the joy, the physics, and even the business of making music, Byrne has created a brainy, irresistible, adventure and an impassioned argument about music's liberating, life-affirming power. In it he explores how profoundly music is shaped by its social and practical context, more than individual authorship. Byrne gives us a flashback of reel to reel recordings of his youth, and explains how the present day musical technology has changed our relationship to playing, performing, and listening to music.

Drawing on a lifetime of music-making as an amateur, professional, performer, producer, band member and solo artist, Byrne (Bicycle Diaries, 2009) tackles the question implicit in his title from multiple angles: How does music work on the ear, brain and body? How do words relate to music in a song? How does live performance relate to recorded performance?

Acting as part historian, anthropologist, and social scientist, he searches for patterns—and shows how they have affected his own work over the years with Talking Heads. Byrne touches on topics as far ranging as bird-songs, to mirror neurons, to African Villages and opera. Always an intensely thoughtful experimenter, here he lets us in on the thinking behind the experiments. But this book is not just, or even primarily, a rock memoir. It's also an exploration of the radical transformation—or surprising durability—of music from the beginning of the age of mechanical reproduction through the era of iTunes and MP3s. Byrne touches on all kinds of music from all ages and every part of the world. Highly recommended—anyone at all interested in music will learn a lot from this book.

How music works is a symphony of musical notes from whatever shore Byrne has landed to help explain the mystery of music. Both deeply personal and intellectually profound, this unique, stimulating book invites us to contemplate the diversity of experience through our ears.

Praise

"Most books that attempt to explain music's mysteries have been technical or historical in nature and concerned primarily with classical music. What's best about How Music Works is that Byrne concentrates on his own experience...His prose style is not very elegant...And yet his personality shines indelibly through this book, just as it does through all his varied albums...certainly a must for the many fans of David Byrne and perhaps others, too, those who wish to follow him down his own personal rabbit hole of speculation and explication." — The New York Times Book Review

"This is a decidedly generous book—welcoming, informal, digressive, full of ideas and intelligence—and one has the pleasant sense that Byrne is speaking directly to the reader, sharing a few confidences he has picked up over the years. It is part autobiography, part how-to guide, part history and part prognostication...Byrne and his book make for good company." — The Washington Post

Joseph Anton

Joseph Anton By Salman Rushdie  $30.00

In 1989 Salman Rushdie was "sentenced to death" by the Ayatollah Khomeini, who thought his book, The Satanic Verses, was critical of Islam. So begins the story of Rushdie's world forced underground, moving from house to house for 9 years with the constant presence of police protection. Joseph Anton was his alias, derived from his favorite authors Conrad and Chekhov.

In this remarkable memoir Rushdie tells his story for the first time; of his crucial battles for his life and freedom of speech. He writes about the grim realities of living with armed policemen, and the close bonds he formed with his protectors. How did he continue to live a life under such extreme circumstances of fear and despair? Rushdie relates his struggle for support and understanding from governments, intelligence chiefs, publishers, journalists, and fellow writers with frankness and honesty. Joseph Anton is a provocative moving book and of vital importance for our politically volatile world of today. In 1998, Iran officially lifted the fatwa, technically giving Rushdie his freedom, but threats against Rushdie's life still reverberate throughout the Muslim world.

Praise

"In Salman Rushdie . . . India has produced a glittering novelist—one with startling imaginative and intellectual resources, a master of perpetual storytelling." — The New Yorker

"Salman Rushdie has earned the right to be called one of our great storytellers." — The Observer

"Our most exhilaratingly inventive prose stylist, a writer of breathtaking originality." — Financial Times

"Joseph Anton is a splendid book, the finest new memoir to cross my desk in many a year. Some may complain that, at more than 600 pages, it is too long, but it never seemed so to me...To the contrary, the length of the book, and its wealth of quotidian detail, serve to draw the reader into the life that Rushdie was forced to lead, to make his isolation and fear palpable." — The Washington Post

Insurgent (Divergent Series #2)

Insurgent (Divergent Series #2) By Veronica Roth  $17.99

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth has given us the sequel to her highly acclaimed dystopian Divergent (2011) series. Insurgent is yet another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her. Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

A bleak post-apocalyptic Chicago ruled by "factions" exemplifying different personality traits collapses into all-out civil war. As the novel opens, the protagonists are undergoing interrogation via truth serum, thus revealing the major events of the series. Roth's saga has at its center the division of humanity into factions based on their performance on aptitude tests. (These factions are Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite.) Originally intended as a benign method of governing, the separation into classes has devolved to the dominance by the Erudites. The members of each faction undergo "Simulations"—gaming during which the participants lose their free will and become killing machines. The focus is firmly on the narrator Tris, who, devastated by guilt and grief, reveals new depth and vitality. Her romance with Tobias is achingly tender and passionate, and her friends and enemies alike display a realistic spectrum of mixed motivations and conflicted choices. Tris is a Divergent, meaning that she has aptitude for more than one faction, and is immune to the simulation mind control. She and her teacher, Tobias, join with a group of people called the "Factionless," who form the nucleus of the revolt.

But the Erudite search for "Divergents" continues relentlessly. They have a secret to protect—one they fear could prove more catastrophic than open warfare; one they will slaughter to keep. The unrelenting suspense piles pursuit upon betrayal upon torture upon pitched battles; the violence is graphic, grisly and shockingly indiscriminate. Insurgent explores several critical themes, including the importance of family and the crippling power of grief at its loss. One of the novel's finest tropes describes this loss as "teetering on the edge of grief's mouth." A very good read.

Praise

"This is one fast-paced read that sticks in your head for days after you put it down, both because of its video-game-like scenes and its thought-provoking premise." — Hollywood Crush, MTV.com

"With brisk pacing and lavish flights of imagination...Divergent clearly has thrills, but it also movingly explores a more common adolescent anxiety—the painful realization that coming into one's own sometimes means leaving family behind, both ideologically and physically." — New York Times Book Review

"The next big thing." — Rolling Stone

Splendors and Glooms)

Splendors and Glooms By Laura Amy Schlitz  $17.99

Newbery Medalist Laura Amy Schlitz brings her sorcery to a Victorian gothic thriller—an enthralling, darkly comic tale that would do Dickens proud. A highly original tale about children caught in a harrowing world of magic and misdeeds.

The master puppeteer, Gaspare Grisini, is so expert at manipulating his stringed puppets that they appear alive. Clara Wintermute, the only child of a wealthy doctor, is spellbound by Grisini's act and invites him to entertain at her birthday party. Seeing his chance to make a fortune, Grisini accepts and makes a splendidly gaudy entrance with caravan, puppets, and his two orphaned assistants, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall. When Clara vanishes that night, suspicion of kidnapping falls upon the puppeteering trio. Grisini also turns up missing in all the mayhem, leaving Lizzie and Parse to untangle the threads of puppetry and dark world magic. As they seek to puzzle out Clara's whereabouts, they uncover Grisini's criminal past and wake up to his evil intentions. Fleeing London, they find themselves caught in a trap set by Grisini's ancient rival, a witch with a deadly inheritance to shed before it's too late.

Praise

"Newbery Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz's Victorian gothic is a rich banquet of dark comedy, scorching magic, and the brilliant and bewitching storytelling that is her trademark." — Editorial Review

"Schlitz skillfully manages multiple narratives as the story makes its complex way forward, creating scenes of warmth and humor along with those of drama and horror. Filled with lush language and delightful sensory details...this marvelous story will keep readers absorbed throughout. While the intricate storytelling, captivating characters and evocative setting owe a great deal to Dickens, the book also feels very much in the tradition of such grand 20th-century writers as Joan Aiken and Elizabeth Goudge. Filled with heart-pounding and heart-rending moments, this delicious, glorious novel is the work of a master of children's literature." — The New York Times Book Review

Mossy

Mossy By Jan Brett  $17.99
Recommended: Ages 3-5

This beautifully rendered picture book reiterates an important message of respect for the environment. Brett uses all her artistic talents to create meticulously rendered watercolor borders with a plethora of natural flora and fauna. The story is simple enough to be grasped easily, and leaves time for finding surprises in the pictures.

Set in the Edwardian era, the story centers on Mossy, a turtle who lives in a pond-side habitat and has moss, ferns, and wildflowers growing from her carapace. The garden on her back draws the attention of a local naturalist, Dr. Carolina, who takes Mossy to her Edwardian museum as a living display Mossy is put in a "viewing pavilion" with plants, a reflecting pool and everything they thought a turtle would need. Though the turtle is carefully tended to and admired by museum visitors, Mossy misses her outdoor home and her special turtle friend named Scoot. Dr. Carolina's niece, Tory notices how sad Mossy is living in the viewing pavilion. Resolution comes in the form of an artist. A portrait of Mossy is painted to immortalize her in the museum before Dr. Carolina and her niece return her to the wild, where Scoot is waiting for her.

Brett's paintings are filled with exquisite borders of shells, rocks, crystals, bird eggs, beetles, and feathers. In contrast, stunning Museum details include elegant spreads of the museum filled with visitors in stylish Edwardian dresses and handsome period details. Jan Brett fans are in for a real visual treat!
