Two prize-winning authors: Naseem Rakha and Sarahlee Lawrence (Presentation)

The Crying Tree
Naseem Rakha

"Beautifully written, expertly crafted, forcefully rendered. Naseem Rakha lays bare all the ambiguities and nuances of our culture in a story that is compelling and deep. The Crying Tree is a story of forgiveness and redemption, but at its core it is a love story as well, and that is the most powerful story of all," says Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain.

Sarahlee Lawrence

Sarahlee Lawrence has run some of the most dangerous rivers of the world as an accomplished river guide. Living her dream on the wild waters led her back to the place she least expected — to her dusty beginnings on her family's remote central Oregon ranch. River House is a beautiful story about a daughter's return and her relationship with her father, as together they brave the cold winter and build a log house by hand.

An intelligent voice. Illuminating books—dauntless, smart, funny, beautifully written. Mary Lou Sanelli examines, deeply and sincerely, what friendship means, and what it costs. She pulls no punches. Through contemplation and personal anecdotes, Sanelli emerges with a strong sense of self. Sanelli brings a sharp eye and sophisticated wit not only to the sometimes disheartening, sometimes encouraging aspects of our current politics and culture, but also to issues specific to her home city of Seattle.

"Mary Lou Sanelli...offer(s) a sensitive, personal look at life's tug-of-wars like those between age and time, male and female, war and peace, place and belonging"—Knute Berger.

When the Killing's Done

When the Killing's Done by T. C. Boyle  $26.95

From bestselling T.C. Boyle: an action- packed adventure about endangered animals and those who protect them.

Set on the wild Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara, T.C. Boyle's powerful new novel combines pulse-pounding adventure with a socially conscious, richly humane tale regarding the dominion we attempt to exert, for better or worse, over the natural world.

A National Park Service biologist, trying to save the island's endangered native creatures from invasive species like rats and feral pigs, runs up against opposition from animal rights activists, fiercely opposed to the killing of any species whatsoever, who will go to any lengths to subvert the biologists' plans.

In dramatizing this collision, Boyle is, in his characteristic fashion, examining one of the essential questions of our time: Who has the right of possession of the land, the waters, the very lives of all the creatures who share this planet with us? When the Killing's Done will offer no transparent answers, but like The Tortilla Curtain, Boyle's classic take on illegal immigration, it will touch you deeply and put you in a position to decide.

In a review for The New York Times, Barbara Kingsolver writes: "Character, science and history co-evolve marvelously here in a tale of fanaticism gone literally overboard...manic plotlines, flamboyant obsessions and cool comeuppance outlandishly delivered...a smart and rollicking novel, with suspense and shipwrecks galore."

The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce Series #2)

The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce Series #2) By Alan Bradley  $15.00

From Dagger Award-winning and internationally bestselling author Alan Bradley comes this utterly beguiling mystery starring one of fiction's most remarkable sleuths: Flavia de Luce, a dangerously brilliant eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders. This time, Flavia finds herself untangling two deaths—separated by time but linked by the unlikeliest of threads.

Flavia thinks that her days of crime-solving in her bucolic English hamlet are over—and then Rupert Porson has an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. The beloved puppeteer has had his own strings sizzled, but who'd do such a thing and why? For Flavia, the questions are intriguing enough to make her put aside her chemistry experiments and schemes of vengeance against her insufferable big sisters. Astride her trusty bicycle, Flavia sets out in search of her hamlet's deadliest secrets.

Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she's letting on? What of the vicar's odd ministrations to the catatonic woman in the dovecote? Then there's a German pilot obsessed with the Brontë sisters, a reproachful spinster aunt, and even a box of poisoned chocolates. Most troubling of all is Porson's assistant, the charming but erratic Nialla. All clues point toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can't solve—without Flavia's help. But in getting so close to who's secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way over her head?

"endlessly entertaining ... Flavia's sparkling narration is ...[a] delight. Comic and irreverent," says Publishers Weekly.

Also look for the first Flavia de Luce mystery, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie—which won the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger Award and a Saskatchewan Writers Guild Award—and the third in the series, A Red Herring Without Mustard.

The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement

The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement by David Brooks   $27.00

With unequaled insight and brio, David Brooks, the New York Times columnist and bestselling author of Bobos in Paradise, has long explored and explained the way we live. Now, with the intellectual curiosity and emotional wisdom that make his columns among the most read in the nation, Brooks turns to the building blocks of human flourishing in a multilayered, profoundly illuminating work grounded in everyday life.

This is the story of how success happens. It is told through the lives of one composite American couple, Harold and Erica—how they grow, push forward, are pulled back, fail, and succeed. Distilling a vast array of information into these two vividly realized characters, Brooks illustrates a fundamental new understanding of human nature. A scientific revolution has occurred—we have learned more about the human brain in the last thirty years than we had in the previous three thousand. The unconscious mind, it turns out, is most of the mind—not a dark, vestigial place but a creative and enchanted one, where most of the brain's work gets done. This is the realm of emotions, intuitions, biases, longings, genetic predispositions, personality traits, and social norms: the realm where character is formed and where our most important life decisions are made. The natural habitat of The Social Animal.

The Social Animal is a moving and nuanced intellectual adventure, a story of achievement and a defense of progress. Impossible to put down, it is an essential book for our time, one that will have broad social impact and will change the way we see ourselves and the world.

"sharp, clear and often very funny...Many of us, Brooks believes, are in the grip of an outdated theory of human nature. We give priority to cold-blooded reason, to deliberative, conscious, logical and linear thought...[but] Brain research, Brooks tells us, 'reminds us of the relative importance of emotion over pure reason, social connections over individual choice, character over IQ.' " — The Washington Post

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything By Joshua Foer  $26.95

On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, Foer found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Moonwalking with Einstein draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top "mental athletes," he learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by Medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, Foer discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories.

Foer takes his inquiry well beyond the arena of mental athletes-across the country and deep into his own mind. In San Diego, he meets an affable old man with one of the most severe case of amnesia on record, where he learns that memory is at once more elusive and more reliable than we might think. In Salt Lake City, he swaps secrets with a savant who claims to have memorized more than nine thousand books. At a high school in the South Bronx, he finds a history teacher using twenty-five-hundred-year-old memory techniques to give his students an edge in the state Regents exam.

At a time when electronic devices have all but rendered our individual memories obsolete, Foer's bid to resurrect the forgotten art of remembering becomes an urgent quest. Moonwalking with Einstein brings Joshua Foer to the apex of the U.S. Memory Championship and readers to a profound appreciation of a gift we all possess but that too often slips our minds.

"captivating ... smart and funny and ... informed by a humanism that enables its author to place the mysteries of the brain within a larger philosophical and cultural context." — The New York Times

"Mental athletes are neither geniuses nor savants, but they have mastered the art of translating what the brain is not good at remembering—words and numbers—into what it is good at remembering—space and images... fascinating and accessible explorations into the workings of the brain." — Kirkus Reviews

A World Without Heroes (Beyonders Series #1)

A World Without Heroes (Beyonders Series #1) By Brandon Mull  $19.99
Recommended for ages 8-12

Attention "Fablehaven" fans! YA-magic creator Brandon Mull has a new series out!

"Brandon Mull is a wizard with words. With Beyonders, he has conjured one of the most original fantasies I've read in years — an irresistible mix of adventure, humor and magic," says Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series.

Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable—until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he's ever seen. In the past, the people of Lyrian welcomed visitors from the Beyond, but attitudes have changed since the wizard emperor Maldor rose to power. The brave resistors who opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail.

In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor, and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes.

"Jason's journey will require readers to think hard about life's unpredictable nature and the difficult decisions that must be made. It also touches on finding trust in others and the importance of asking for help...highly recommended" — School Library Journal

The Crows of Pearblossom

The Crows of Pearblossom By Aldous Huxley, illustrated by Sophie Blackall   $16.95

Written in 1944 by Aldous Huxley as a Christmas gift for his niece, and newly released and illustrated for modern audiences!

The Crows of Pearblossom tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Crow, who live in a cottonwood tree. The hungry Rattlesnake that lives at the bottom of the tree has a nasty habit of stealing Mrs. Crow's eggs before they can hatch, so Mr. Crow and his wise friend, Old Man Owl, devise a sneaky plan to trick him.

This funny story of cleverness triumphing over greed, similar in tone and wit to the work of A. A. Milne, shows a new side of a great writer. Paired with stunning illustrations by Sophie Blackall, this timeless tale is sure to grab the attention of many readers—adults and children alike.

Alternating between story and fact, this lovingly crafted picture book follows a mother and son to the weekly market. As they check off items on their shopping list, the reader learns how each particular food was grown or produced, from its earliest stages to how it ended up at the market. To Market, to Market is a timely book that shines awareness on the skill that goes into making good food.

"McClure's papercuts of windblown hair, vegetable leaves, craftsmen at work, and beds of hay continue to delight. This is, in effect, two books in one: younger readers can stick to the gentle introductions to sections about kale, smoked salmon, honey, blueberry turnovers, cheese, and even napkins; older children will appreciate... each product's path to market." — Publisher's Weekly

"elegant prose describe[s] each process, ending with a simple 'thank you'... youngsters learn about apple-tree grafting and pruning, growing kale, beekeeping, smoking fish, baking, making batik napkins, and the art of cheese-making. Market day done, the mother and son head home with their loaded basket. Reminiscent of WPA woodcuts, McClure's mysterious and beautiful images are cut from black paper with an X-Acto knife; the lacelike result is scanned and colored. McClure's art and life intersect in this stirring tribute to the connections among nature, people, and the food that nourishes them." — School Library Journal
