Jess Walter at Wenatchee Valley College!

'The Zero' could end up as the 'Catch 22' of 9/11... (with) its brilliant ironies, its deadpan truths, its insider smarts and its everyguy hero... (Walter) elevates 'The Zero' above mere satire to Kafkaesque parable." — The Wall Street Journal

"... a noir page-turner with powerful social commentary... nails our often surreal post-9/11 world, where exploitation of the tragedy has become commonplace. Walter is an immensely talented writer." — Washington Post Book World

"This is political satire at its best: scathing, funny, dark. And the actual mystery rivets" — Entertainment Weekly (Grade: A)

"(A) brilliant tour de force... the breakout novel of a brave and talented young writer." — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Walter establishes himself as the current master of fractured U.S. history with all of the surrealism and black humor necessary for such an undertaking. Kafka would have to laugh." — Library Journal

    Want to hear more?

Jess Walter, author of The Zero, will be reading from his book at Wenatchee Valley College
on November 5th from 7:00-9:00 pm.

    BREAKING NEWS!
    BIG EVENT!
YOU'LL LAUGH - YOU'LL CRY (Tears of laughter, of course)
    AND ALL BECAUSE...

November 8th, Patrick McManus is coming back to town and he has a new book!

The McManus motto: Never think too hard about anything you enjoy doing.

On the heels of his two Sheriff Bo Tully mysteries, The Blight Way and Avalanche, New York Times best-selling author Patrick F. McManus returns to the classic form that established him as one of America's most beloved humorists and outdoor authors.
KERPLUNK! gathers thirty-six hilarious stories, all of which first appeared in Outdoor Life, that at once celebrate and lampoon life among the hunting and fishing set in the Pacific Northwest. With a trademark "style that brings to mind Mark Twain, Art Buchwald, and Garrison Keillor" (People), McManus recounts the haphazard exploits and endearing foibles of the kind of folks-some good-natured, some irascible-who appreciate an unproductive afternoon spent fly fishing, even if the stubborn fish aren't running.

And now, here's your chance to meet Patrick McManus
and get a signed copy of his new book, Kerplunk.

Thursday evening, November 8th from 6:30-8:30pm.
Patrick McManus will be at A Book for All Seasons
    for a Signing, a Reading, and a Q & A Session.

Join us for a night of fun, laughter and Patrick McManus!

Business Insights with John McQuaig's Book Parallel Peaks on November 10th

To say that John McQuaig has conquered mountains is not just reusing a tired metaphor. When this entrepreneur and consultant is not advising his business clients on business strategies, finances, and taxes as a CPA and certified management consultant (CMC) from Wenatchee, WA, you're more likely to find this veteran mountaineer in any corner of the world literally climbing a mountain.
He's scaled Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro and Kala Pattar in Nepal, and he has frequently climbed Washington's Rainier and Baker, two mountains that as a youth helped instill in him a love for nature and a drive to conquer goals.
His Book, Parallel Peaks offers the advantage of his knowledge and experience from both of these fronts.

When you climb a mountain, your goal is clear, but in business, the goal frequently isn't so clear. Owners, employees, bankers, advisors and investors can find themselves climbing toward what they assume is a business's summit... but instead end up scaling different peaks.

Parallel Peaks: Business Insights While Climbing the World's Highest Mountains, reveals secrets to building a successful business, secrets based on unique insights that came to the author while working his way upwards toward many of the world's loftiest natural summits.

John McQuaig is uniquely qualified to write this book. In addition to being a practicing CPA and business advisor for 30 years, he has co-founded a bank, served as its Chairman of the Board and watched it grow to more than $300 million in assets.

This book ties together eight common elements of mountaineering and business management that make the crucial difference between success and failure in either endeavor.

This book will challenge and motivate you along the way to your summit!

    1:00-3:00 pm

Meet a True Adventurer! Helen Thayer arrives on November 11th!

In 1988, at the age of 50, New Zealand native Helen Thayer became the first woman in the world to travel on foot to the magnetic North Pole, one of the world's most remote and dangerous regions. Her only companion was Charlie, her loyal husky, who was integral to her survival. She penned the book Polar Dream chronicling the story of their heroic trek and extraordinary relationship while enduring the hardships of the North Pole.

In 1994, Helen and her husband Bill, hiked above the Arctic Circle in the Canadian Yukon Territory and lived one hundred feet from a wolf den, observing and documenting their experiences. Experiences made even more unique by the inclusion of Charlie, their part husky, part wolf companion, who was the key to their acceptance. Following this experience, the book Three Among the Wolves: A Couple and Their Dog Live a Year with Wolves in the Wild was written as both a tale of natural history and adventure.

Helen Thayer is not one to sit idle by any means of the word. Her latest adventure brings us to her most recent book and to an event not to be missed! At age 63, Helen and her husband Bill 74, walked the entire distance, west to east, across the Mongolian Gobi Desert. In a journey of discovery, they covered a distance of almost 1,500 miles, enduring sand storms, 126 degree temperatures, and at one point, a desperate search for water. Scorpions, choking sand, border guards, the book Walking the Gobi — a 1600-Mile Trek Across a Desert of Hope and Despair is a story of courage, perseverance, and the ability to rise above adversity.

Helen Thayer is an accomplished photographer and she captured many wonderful images of the Gobi Desert Nomads who still live the centuries old lifestyle of their ancestors and shared their food and their ways with the adventurers. Several of these images are beautifully peppered throughout the book Walking the Gobi while many others can be seen in Helen Thayer's slide presentation.

Helen Thayer presentations are educational, entertaining, and highly motivating. More than just an "armchair adventure" presentation, Helen can motivate an audience to believe they too have unlimited horizons. Helen believes, "My journeys are like life itself. We all have our North Poles and our Gobi deserts, but we can all reach our goals just as I did, one step at a time, never giving up on ourselves. If we reach for the top and believe we can do it, we can make our dreams come true."

The Return of Light: A Christmas Tale.

Every winter, the magical Christmas Deer visits the Christmas Trees growing on Faith Mountain. "I promise that your life will bring The Return of Light to the humans," he says. Then he bows his head and touches each mature tree with his starry antlers.
One year, however, he pauses before Treewing, a fir tree who's too young to be harvested. The Christmas Deer touches him anyway, telling him that he has a special destiny.
Cut down and transported to a Christmas Tree lot in the city, Treewing waits anxiously for a happy family to buy him, take him home, and love him. But this doesn't happen, and after all the other trees have been sold, he's left all alone. Treewing struggles to understand the Christmas Deer's message. If no one wants him for their Christmas tree, what is his special destiny?
At last, on Christmas Eve, the friendship of a young boy, a precious baseball, and a group of homeless people help Treewing understand his special role in bringing The Return of Light to those who need it most

Dia Calhoun grew up in Seattle, Washington, where she studied ballet for many years. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Mills College with a double major in English and Book Arts. Calhoun returned to Seattle to build a successful career as a freelance lettering and logo artist. Her most visible work is the logo for “Alaska” on the side of Alaska Airlines' aircraft. She also taught typography and lettering at the Cornish College of the Arts.
Now a full time writer, Calhoun makes frequent school visits to share her work with kids. In her spare time she sings Italian arias, fly-fishes, gardens, and eats lots of chocolate. She lives with her husband, two cats, and two ghost cats in Tacoma, Washington.

    Lisa Wells Reviews:
The Endurance - Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition by Caroline Alexander

ImageThe Endurance - Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition by Caroline Alexander with the Astonishing Unpublished Photographs of Frank Hurley is easily one of the most fascinating and interesting books that I own and yet it is also one of the most stunningly beautiful.
The author, being the curator of an exhibition on the Endurance that opened at the American Museum of Natural History in 1999, not only tells us of the 1914 Antarctic expedition and their legendary story of survival, but she fills the book with 140 vintage photographs that bring the tale to life. The photographs were taken by Australian photographer Frank Hurley. The first thing that you will notice about the photographs is their remarkable beauty, but as you read on, the fact that the images survived at all will simply amaze you.
Renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition failed and yet their story of survival is a testament to leadership, courage, spirit, and determination.
This book is an awe-inspiring read and you will lose yourself in the 93-year-old photographs that document their icy struggle.

Jalen Willis Reviews: He Came with the Couch by David Slonim

This is a very funny book!

Thanks for the review, Jalen! And on November 8th, have a Happy 5th Birthday!

Publisher Comments: Sophie's family has found the perfect couch, but it comes with something extra, and getting rid of that extra something is impossible. In the end, though, who would want to? This zany tale of upholsterosis (a chronic state of couch-potato-ness) is sure to tickle the funny bones of young readers?and not-so-young-readers too!

A Staff Bow (As In Curtsy) and a Store WOW - A Two for One!
We're combining our Staff Bow and Store WOW this month because we thought it was time that everyone knew about the remarkable Sharpe Brothers, Stephen and Nat.

These two brothers live next door to each other and work together - Stephen as the manager of A Book for All Seasons and Nat who manages the Used Books Section at A Book for All Seasons, one day a week and then works at the Eagle Creek Winery and it's fabulous new tasting room, D'Vinery.
But wait, that's not all - they are both also members of the most popular new band in town, the Chumstick Liberation Front.

The Chumstick Liberation Front is well known in Central Washington. They've played a range of venues, including Steven's Pass, the Munchen Haus, and Uncle Uli's Pub (The Halloween Party was a rousing success!). They've played small events such as weddings and parties and large events like the Bike and Brew Festival and they were the headlining act at the 2007 Wenatchee Valley Salmon Festival.

Stephen is the singer for the group and he also plays guitar and Nat provides the soul for the group with his harmonica. When asked about his playing, Nat told us "I also play the tambourine and claves... and I've played professionally for over twenty years. If you take the combined musical experience of all of the members of this band, it would be well over 100 years!"
The other members of the band are Sergio Cuevas on the drums, Mike Marriott on lead guitar, Mark Helsel on bass, and Mike King is percussion and Spiritual Advisor. Stephen also writes songs for the group and when asked about his influences, he said "I have had so many, but I suppose the Kinks and John Prine to name a couple".

The next time that you see that the Chumstick Liberation Front is playing nearby, do yourself a favor and go check it out. Their music, according to Stephen, is dance music that is a mixture of folk, reggae, afro-beat, and rock. "We have something for all ages" he added. And while having fun, dancing to the best new music around, just remember that the Sharpe brothers are there, having a good time, right along with you!

    Food, Glorious Food!
    Reviews from the Cookbook Nook!

Theresa D-Litzenberger reviews Risotto by Hamlyn

When I read a cookbook, I read it like a menu at a restaurant. Each recipe is an invitation to a delicious meal. Unlike a restaurant meal, though, I take into account that I am making this meal, so I question whether or not I want to go to the trouble.
The book Risotto, by Hamlyn whetted my appetite enough that I plunged into one of the simpler recipes for Herb Risotto. The introductory pages were easy to comprehend and helpful. The recipe itself was straightforward. The beautiful pictures of each dish gave me an idea of what to expect.
I found making Herb Risotto easier than I expected. Since it takes time to make risotto, I had time to check and recheck the recipe to make sure I was doing it correctly. Actually, I found it enjoyable taking time to incorporate each ladle of broth into the rice.
The final result was the most rewarding. It was excellent. The recipe passed my other test of a good cookbook. I was successful, and I would try another recipe from the book.

Note: We still have one copy of Risotto in stock. Once this copy is gone, it looks like our warehouse is out of stock on this book, but there are still copies available through our Out of Print Book Search Service! Prices may vary - Email or call for details!

Toss Risotto lovingly into your cart for $14.95!

A Verse From a Poetic Mind
    Silence

There is the sudden silence of the crowd
Above a motionless player on the field,
And the silence of the orchid

The silence of the falling vase
    Before it strikes the floor
The silence of the belt when it is not striking the child.

The stillness of the cup and the water in it,
    The silence of the moon
And the quiet of the day far from the roar of the sun.

The silence when I hold you to my chest,
The silence of the window above us,
And the silence when you rise and turn away.

And there is the silence of this morning
Which I have broken with my pen,
A silence that had piled up all night

Like snow falling in the darkness of the house-
The silence before I wrote a word
    And the poorer silence now.

Billy Collins -The Trouble with Poetry and other Poems - page 85.

From the publisher: With a distinct voice, a spare elegance, and accessible language, America's two-term Poet Laureate has opened the door to poetry for those to whom it might otherwise have remained closed. Through simple turns of phrase, Billy Collins shows that good poetry doesn't have to e obscure or incomprehensible - which is perhaps the real trouble with "serious" poetry. This dazzling collection explores boyhood, jazz, love, the passage of time, and, of course, writing. Gorgeous, funny, and empathetic, Billy Collins' poetry is a window through which we see our lives as if for the first time.
Billy Collins is also the bestselling author of Nine Horses and Sailing Alone Around the Room.

An Idea from a Scientific Mind

ImageThe World Without Us by Alan Weisman

So let us try a creative experiment: Suppose that the worst has happened. Human extinction is a fait accompli. Not by nuclear calamity, asteroid collision, or anything ruinous enough to also wipe out most everything else, leaving whatever remained in some radically altered, reduced state. Nor by some grim eco-scenario in which we agonizingly fade, dragging many more species with us in the process.
Instead, picture a world from which we all suddenly vanished. Tomorrow.
Unlikely perhaps, but for the sake of argument, not impossible.

Look around you, at today's world. Your house, your city. The surrounding land, the pavement underneath and the soil hidden below that. Leave it all in place, but extract the human beings. Wipe us out, and see what's left. How would the rest of nature respond if it were suddenly relieved of the relentless pressures we heap on it and our fellow organisms? How soon would, or could, the climate return to where it was before we fired up all our engines?
And what of our finest creations - our architecture, our art, our many manifestations of spirit? Are any truly timeless, at least enough so to last until the sun expands and roasts our Earth to a cinder?
Could nature ever obliterate all our traces?

Excerpts from The World Without Us by Alan Weisman - Page 3-4.

The book The World Without Us by Alan Weisman has been called one of the "grandest thought experiments of our time" by author Bill McKibben and is a penetrating, page-turning tour of a post-human Earth. From the New York subways to the Panama Canal, Alan Weisman offers an utterly original approach to questions of humanity's impact on the planet: he asks us to envision our Earth, without us.

    Jipkiss Catablog...

    Image

Our dear Jipkiss... He had a very scary Halloween night.

His plan was to follow behind all of the littlest Trick or Treaters, hoping that when they dropped their candy, he could lay claim to all of sweets and goodies that they'd worked so hard for. (This is due to the fact that in our last issue of the Jotter, we discovered that Jipkiss was a complete bust when trying to Trick or Treat for himself!).

This plan may have sounded like a good idea in theory, but all who are experienced in the ways of Halloween know that on All Hallow's Eve, The ghosts and goblins are in complete control of all lost candy and that when the little ones drop any candy that has been received through Trick or Treating, it goes straight back down to Halloween Land, never to be seen again and poor Jipkiss spent the entire night completely perplexed!

This month, we've been telling him about Thanksgiving and it sounds to him like there's no chance he'll miss a meal on that day, so instead of writing the Catablog this month, he's decided to read up on the holiday to be sure that there's nothing that can keep him from lots of food when the day comes!

We'll make sure he gets plenty...
Jipkiss will be back in December!

ImageEat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned thirty, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want - a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world - all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly medicine man and also fell in love the best way - unexpectedly. An intensely articulate and moving memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment and stop trying to live in imitation of society's ideals. It is certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change.

ImageWater for Elephants by Sara Gruen

When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her. Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. ImageThe Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen

Deep in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest is a small mill town called Commonwealth, conceived as a haven for workers weary of exploitation. For the adopted son of the town's founder, it is a haven in another sense; as the first place in his life he's had a loving family to call his own. And yet, amidst the backdrop of a world war raging, another shadow has fallen across the region in the form of a deadly illness striking down vast swaths of surrounding communities.
Inspired by a little-known historical footnote regarding towns that quarantined themselves during the 1918 epidemic, The Last Town on Earth is a remarkably moving and accomplished debut.

Image Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson

In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend K2, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan's Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time - Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban. The powerful and profoundly moving story of how one man really is changing the world - one school at a time.

ImageThe Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. ImageThis is Your Brain on Music by Daniel J. Levitin

Set against the backdrop of one of the most virulent epidemics hat America ever experienced—the 1918 flu epidemic—Thomas Mullen's powerful, sweeping first novel is a tale of morality in a time of upheaval.
Whether you load your iPod with Bach or Bono, music has a significant role in your life—even if you never realized it. Why does music evoke such powerful moods? The answers are at last becoming clear, thanks to revolutionary neuroscience and the emerging field of evolutionary psychology. Both a cutting-edge study and a tribute to the beauty of music itself, This Is Your Brain on Music unravels a host of mysteries that affect everything from pop culture to our understanding of human nature.
Neuroscientist and professional musician Daniel Levitin presents a fascinating exploration of the relationship between music and the mind—and the role of melodies in shaping our lives.

    Pat's Corner

Scary Dairy and Mad Cowboy, radical thoughts bouncing around in my head this morning following Halloween night. Sometimes I'm afraid I read too much subversive materials. But with a title like The Untold Story of Milk, I didn't think I was getting in over my head. Ron Schmid, author, naturopathic physician and graduate of MIT will change the way you think about milk, and maybe make you reconsider what he calls the modern myths about cholesterol, animal fats and heart disease. And of course The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, is a book to pick up if you are in the questioning mode.
That explains the Scary Dairy, but where does the Mad Cowboy come in?
I just had a phone call from Lisa Pretiola, co-owner with her husband of Pretiola Natural Bakery, inviting the bookstore to take part in an evening of environmental, food and agriculture discussion on Thursday, November 15th from 6-8pm at the Conservatory at the Apple Anne Antique Mall. Cost is $15.00 single or $28.00 couple. Lecture only at 7:00 pm is $8.00. For more information on the discussion event call Lisa at 509-782-0607 or 509-664-9079. Howard Lyman, the acclaimed mad cowboy will be presenting on the topic, Destroying the Earth Bite by Bite.
Come hear a cattle rancher explain why he won't meat and join in the lively discussion that is sure to ensue. You can explore the Mad Cowboy's website by clicking here: http://www.madcowboy.com
