Naseem Rakha signs her book, The Crying Tree (Book-signing)

Naseem Rakha

"Beautifully written, expertly crafted, forcefully rendered. The Crying Tree is a story of redemption, but at its core it is a love story as well, and that is the most powerful story of all," says Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain.

The "crying tree" is a willow, and one grows near the grave of a fifteen-year-old boy, Shep, shot and killed in his family home. After the murder, Shep's mother, Irene, lives week by week for the killer's execution. Those weeks turn into months and then years. Struggling with severe depression, alcoholism, and despair, Irene takes the extraordinary and clandestine step of writing to her son's killer in prison. Then Irene receives the notice that she had craved for so long - the execution will occur within the month. This announcement shakes the very core of the family. Irene, it turns out, isn't the only one with a shocking secret.

Less Is More: Embracing Simplicity for a Healthy Planet, a Caring Economy and Lasting Happiness by Cecile Andrews

Are you as happy as you'd like to be? Do you live in a happy, carefree country? Is global happiness improving? Or is an obsession with wealth de-stabilizing our economy, depleting our planet, and undermining our joy?

Throughout history, a current of wisdom keeps repeating that we could make a different choice: that less can be more. Less is More is a compelling collection of essays by journalists, businesspeople, ministers, and activists who have thought deeply about simplicity. They bring us a new vision of Less: less stuff, less work, less stress, less debt. A life with Less becomes a life of More: more time, more satisfaction, more balance, and more security.

African Story-Time a Laughter-Filled Success

African Story-Time a Laughter-Filled Success

Thank you Sankusem and Icicle Creek Music Center!

Did we laugh harder at Ghanian musician George François' fabulous story-telling, or at ICMC cellist Sally Singer's hilarious sound effects? Here went trickster Anansi plodding through the forest (strum-thrum-strum-thrum); and here went poor tricked lion's head spinning with confusion -- zzzzzz -- how can a cello make that little whirling sound like bees?

Masterful story-telling from a rich oral tradition, together with exposure to the stories within music; we learned about Ghanian traditions, and at the same time, experienced two different cultures and art-forms supporting and complementing one another. Cross-cultural artistic exchange is among the missions of both Sankusem and ICMC. And it was the lively, laughing experience of delighted children on our balcony under the oak leaves.

Thank you, ICMC volunteers and staff, and thank you, generous, talented musicians who donated goodwill and time to our community. Yes, please, we would love to have you back next year; there are so many children in our community still to delight with international and artistic richness.

Anansi the trickster is back, as delightfully wicked as ever. Will little Bush Deer, the shyest animal in the forest, finally be the one to teach Anansi a valuable life lesson? Children love the humor in the story and searching for the hidden deer on each page.

The News Where You Are

The News Where You Are by Catherine O'Flynn  $15.00

From the bestselling author of "What Was Lost" comes a spirited literary mystery about a television anchorman's search for the truth.

Beneath his famously corny on-screen persona, television news anchor Frank Allcroft is haunted by loss: the mysterious hit-and-run that killed his predecessor and friend, Phil, and the ongoing demolition of his architect father's monumental postwar buildings. And then there are the things he can't seem to lose, no matter how hard he tries: his home, for one, on the market for years; and the nagging sense that he will never quite be the son his mother—newly ensconced in an assisted-living center—wanted. As Frank uncovers the shocking truth behind Phil's death, and comes to terms with his domineering father's legacy, it is his beloved young daughter, Mo, who points him toward the future.

Catherine O'Flynn writes in a beautiful prose that alternates between bitter and sweet, comical and tragic. By searching the themes of abandonment, the race of time, and the nature of friendship, the author creates a suspenseful, if untraditional, thriller that leaves you pondering how much of what we know—whether about friends or family—is actually real.

Funny and touching, "The News Where You Are" is a moving exploration of what we do and don't leave behind, proving once more that Catherine O'Flynn's writing "shimmers with dark brilliance," says the Chicago Tribune. Catherine O'Flynn's debut novel, What Was Lost, won the Costa First Novel Award in 2007. She lives in Birmingham, England.

Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home

Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home by Laura & Lisa Ling  $26.99

On March 17, 2009, Laura Ling and her colleague, Euna Lee were apprehended by fearsome North Korean soldiers and violently dragged through the forests along the China-North Korea border and across the Tumen River. They had been working on a television project about the human trafficking crisis that China and North Korea have been trying to cover up for years.

Shortly after, the battered and terrified women were brought before North Korea's Supreme Court and were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in notorious gulag-style camps. They were the first Americans ever tried before the court.

Forming half of the story of SOMEWHERE INSIDE, Laura provides a gripping account of struggle at the hands of the North Korean guards, as well as her cunning in being able to befriend some of the guards. For her meals in prison, Laura was given rice mixed with rocks before being subject to rounds of harrowing interrogations. Throughout her five months of imprisonment, Laura experienced the darkest moments of her life as she began to come to terms with the possibility that she might never see her family again.

After hearing of Laura's capture, Laura's sister, world-renowned journalist Lisa Ling, immediately thrust herself into private and public efforts to help secure Laura and Euna's release. She was unrelenting in her mission. Lisa recounts insider conversations with people in the highest levels of government, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, Senator John Kerry, and Governor Bill Richardson, among others. She also shares insights into the balancing of agendas and egos with which she had to juggle.

From opposite ends of the world, Laura and Lisa Ling became an unprecedented channel of communication between North Korea, one of the most oppressive regimes on the planet, and its archenemy, the United States. SOMEWHERE INSIDE is a story of survival, sisterhood and the ignition of a new relationship between two nations that have been at war for more than half a century.

97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement

97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by Jane Ziegelman  $25.99

In 97 Orchard, Jane Ziegelman explores the culinary life that was the heart and soul of New York's Lower East Side around the turn of the twentieth century—a city within a city, where Germans, Irish, Italians, and Eastern European Jews attempted to forge a new life. Through the experiences of five families, all of them residents of 97 Orchard Street, she takes readers on a vivid and unforgettable tour, from impossibly cramped tenement apartments down dimly lit stairwells where children played and neighbors socialized, beyond the front stoops where immigrant housewives found respite and company, and out into the hubbub of the dirty, teeming streets.

Ziegelman shows how immigrant cooks brought their ingenuity to the daily task of feeding their families, preserving traditions from home but always ready to improvise. While health officials worried that pushcarts were unsanitary and that pickles made immigrants too excitable to be good citizens, a culinary revolution was taking place in the streets of what had been culturally an English city. Along the East River, German immigrants founded breweries, dispensing their beloved lager in the dozens of beer gardens that opened along the Bowery. Russian Jews opened tea parlors serving blintzes and strudel next door to Romanian nightclubs that specialized in goose pastrami. On the streets, Italian peddlers hawked the cheese-and-tomato pies known as pizzarelli, while Jews sold knishes and squares of halvah. Gradually, as Americans began to explore the immigrant ghetto, they uncovered the array of comestible enticements of their foreign-born neighbors. 97 Orchard charts this exciting process of discovery as it lays bare the roots of our collective culinary heritage.

Perenelle struggles powerfully, vowing to protect the city at any cost, but each day she weakens, even with Nicholas back at her side.

Summer Birds: The Butterflies of Maria Merian

Summer Birds: The Butterflies of Maria Merian by Margarita Engle, illustrated by Julie Paschkis  $16.99
Recommended for ages 4 through 9.

In the seventeenth century, a thirteen-year-old girl questions the accepted wisdom of her time. Working in secret, lest she be accused of witchcraft, she discovers where butterflies really come from.

It's not often that someone is born both a great scientist and a great artist, especially if that someone is a girl in the middle of the 17th century. But Maria Sibylla Merian was. In a time when people thought that butterflies (then called "summer birds") came from the soil magically, Maria collected, watched, and waited with an open mind, documenting with precise watercolors what actually happened. Engle captures the voice of this patient, determined thirteen year-year-old, as she documents metamorphosis.

An inspirational book for young scientists, little girls with big dreams, and anyone who has ever determined to discover the truth for themselves. Young readers will imagine themselves growing up to follow their dreams.

Kirkus Reviews says, "Engle and Paschkis tell Merian's story with emotion and passion, capturing ... the patient precision that Maria must have used to collect her specimens, watching them in secret and then waiting for metamorphosis ... The illustrator's rich, gouache folk-style paintings ... share that joy in the natural world."

Return to the world of the Liveship Traders and journey along the Rain Wild River in the second installment of high adventure from the author of the internationally acclaimed Farseer trilogy.

"A new generation of dragons promises new life and prosperity to the people who live along the Rain Wild River, but they emerge from their cocoons deformed and sickly. Driven away from human settlements and assigned a group of young misfits as their keepers, the dragons make their dangerous way upriver toward a legendary lost haven, the city of Kelsingra. This journey brings dragons, keepers, and other travelers into conflict with a hostile environment and, most dangerous of all, with one another. Hobb's sequel to Dragon Keeper continues the stories of the Wilding girl Thymara, the Bingtown gentlewoman-turned-naturalist Alyse, and the blue queen dragon Sintara. While federal authorities pressure Madriani to keep the incident quiet, steely-eyed weapons-control expert Cole insists they go public to prevent a similar event in the future. And Madraini is still embroiled with the horrifying assassination linked to a shadowy figure called Liquida — "the Mexecutioner." Madriani and Cole begin to fear that the Old Weatherman and Liquida have joined forces and intend to pull the city — and the country — into a vortex of terror before Madriani and Cole can find answers to the enigma that is "the rule of nine."
