The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight is a bewitching novel of post-Soviet lives. It moves between the magical, the comical and the transcendent to portray a people who rely on dreams to defy the coming of dereliction and decay. Tanya tries to persuade American benefactors to revitalize her very dusty provincial museum, where fake exhibits have been lovingly crafted from cardboard, wire and glue. Meanwhile, in the courtyard of Tanya's apartment complex, a corpse refuses to decompose, taking flight, and dispensing more advice than anyone desires. "A heartbreaking comic masterpiece that already has a place in the literature of protest," says The Guardian.

Children's Book Week

Children's Book Week May 10-16: Every Child a Reader

It all began with the idea that children's books can change lives. In 1913, Franklin Matthiews, the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, began touring the country to promote children's books. His dream of a national Children's Book Week was realized in 1919. Now Children's Book Week is celebrated in schools, libraries, bookstores, clubs, homes — any place where there are children and books. As Frederic Melcher declared: "A great nation is a reading nation."

Hotel On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

Now Available in paperback — Hotel On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford  $15.00

An unforgettable romance, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet expresses the power of forgiveness and the power of the human heart. Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, this is an extraordinary story of commitment and enduring hope.

Long boarded-up, an old hotel that was once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown is opened, revealing an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As the hotel's new owner opens and displays a Japanese parasol, Chinese-American Henry remembers a young Japanese-American girl from his youth. Henry and Keiko had forged a bond of friendship and innocent love transcending the prejudices of their Old World ancestors. Now, forty years later, Henry explores the hotel's basement for her family's belongings and a long-lost object whose value he cannot even begin to measure. Henry's search will take him on a journey to revisit the sacrifices he has made for family, for love, and for country.

The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight

The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight
By Gina Ochsner  $25.00

The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight is a bewitching novel of post-Soviet lives. It moves between the magical, the comical and the transcendent to portray a people who rely on dreams to defy the coming of dereliction and decay.

In her very dusty provincial museum of fake exhibits lovingly crafted from cardboard, wire and glue, Tanya dreams of Russian art and wonders when Yuri will stop fishing long enough to notice how she adores him. Then her boss gives her the vast responsibility of cultivating potential benefactors from America, and persuading them to give their money to the very needy All-Russian All-Cosmopolitan City Museum. Before long, Tanya has involuntarily enlisted all her neighbors in the scheme.

Meanwhile the corpse in the courtyard refuses to decompose. Its spirit takes flight around the apartments, dispensing more advice than anyone desires - goading the men and annoying the women, in a block where too many mothers and fathers are missing and too many memories lie stagnant on old battlefields.

A Twisted Faith: A Minister's Obsession and the Murder That Destroyed a Church

A Twisted Faith: A Minister's Obsession and the Murder That Destroyed a Church by Gregg Olsen  $25.99

From one of the foremost names in true crime, New York Times best-selling author Gregg Olsen, comes the gripping true story of a minister who murdered his wife and seduced four of his female congregants. In 1997, a Bainbridge Island house went up in flames, and the charred remains of the minister's wife were discovered inside. But her lungs didn't contain smoke. Was she dead before the fire began? Philandering minister Nick Hacheney was convicted of murder five years to the day after his wife died.

"A disturbing portrait of a community undone by its appealing young pastor... After this tragic accident, [the death of his wife and loss of his home in a fire], Hacheney sought comfort from the community — particularly the women. Soon he was involved in affairs with five women, one of them the murdered woman's mother, telling each that the sex was part of God's plan...an unsettling story of a man who committed murder and then used his charm and his power as a man of God to exploit his congregants and satisfy his sexual obsession" — Publishers Weekly

When That Rough God Goes Riding: Listening to Van Morrison

When That Rough God Goes Riding: Listening to Van Morrison By Greil Marcus  $22.95

From renowned music critic Greil Marcus comes this revelatory exploration of Van Morrison: what makes him one of the most unique musical artists of our time and what distinguishes his most transcendent moments. Van Morrison remains a singer who can be compared to no other in the history of modern popular music. The wild swings in his music, mirroring the swings in his success, make Van Morrison one of the most perplexing and mysterious figures in popular modern music.

Through the extraordinary and unclassifiable moments in his long career, beginning in 1965 and continuing in full force to this day, Marcus reveals a singer on a quest to reach extreme musical thresholds; moments not enclosed by the will or the intention of the performer, but which somehow emerge at the limits of the musician and his song.

"Morrison's volatile idiosyncrasy and diverse oeuvre make his career difficult to appraise, but Marcus convinces us of its singular importance" — Booklist.

Eclipse of the Sunnis: Power, Exile, and Upheaval in the Middle East

Eclipse of the Sunnis: Power, Exile, and Upheaval in the Middle East by Deborah Amos   $25.00

An award-winning NPR correspondent illuminates the flipside of the Shia revival—the dislocation and destabilization of the Sunni Muslims—and its impact on the Middle East. Displaced by the conflict in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Sunni Muslims have spread across the Middle East, unbalancing that sensitive region with one of the great migrations of modern times.

Through history, one of the most volatile dangers has been the displaced population, angered by their inability to return to their homeland. Now, the pattern has been repeated. A new population of exiles, as large as the Palestinians, has been created. This particular displacement stirs up the historic conflict between Sunni and Shia. More significant even than the creation of colonial nation states a century ago, the alienation of the Sunni middle class has the capacity to cause resounding resentments across the region for generations to come.

"While the U.S. military 'surge' began to suppress violence in Iraq in 2007, a surge of another kind with more catastrophic consequences was already in full swing. Millions of Iraqis, mostly Sunnis, fled the country, creating a refugee crisis that has only recently been acknowledged as such by the U.S. government. Veteran reporter Amos traces the exodus and the effects …Amos's breathtaking work implicates not only shortsighted American policy but the age-old schism between Sunni and Shia and the cagey maneuverings of such meddling neighbors as Syria. The weight and complexity of the Iraqi problem is on full display, with shreds of hope pushing through the layers like scrub in the desert." — Publishers Weekly

Red Pyramid: Book one of the Kane Chronicles

Red Pyramid: Book one of the Kane Chronicles By Rick Riordan  $17.99

Rick Riordan has a new kid's adventure series coming out May 2010? My son and I are all over it.

Why do people compare Rick Riordan's kid's books to Harry Potter? Maybe because Rick creates that same magical combination of bigger-than-life characters, laugh-out-loud humor, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and relevance to the important issues young adults face. Reluctant readers, book-worms, girls, and boys — every kid I've met yet has given Rick's first series, Percy Jackson, rave reviews.

In Red Pyramid, ancient Egyptian forces are unleashed, sending siblings Sadie and Carter on a dangerous journey across the globe. Since their mother's death, Sadie and Carter have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.

One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives. Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe — a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.

"Swap Egyptian mythology for Percy Jackson's Greek gods...an ancient history lesson seamlessly unfurled in a rip-roaring adventure...another funny yarn with kids in the lead and animal sidekicks that nearly steal the show." — Publishers Weekly

Mama, Is It Summer Yet?

Mama, Is It Summer Yet? by Nikki McClure   $17.95

Following the success of New York Times best-selling All in a Day, Nikki McClure once again uses her unique paper cutouts to showcase wonderful images of nature and the joys of family and the outdoors, creating a book that is both timeless and fresh: Mama, Is It Summer Yet?

A little boy who can't wait for summer keeps asking his mama, Is it summer yet? Mama says, Not yet, little one, then points to the signs that spring is turning to summer—the softening of the earth, the nest-building of squirrels, the singing of birds—and encourages her son to savor the beauty of spring. Young children see the passage of time through the seasonal changes to the world around them in this charming book, illustrated with Nikki McClure's extraordinary cut-paper art.

"As in her previous book, Cynthia Rylant's All in a Day, McClure's cut-paper scenes do more than just support the story; they form its heart...The substantial yet delicate lines...possess a visual rhythm, creating forms that repeat or echo (a ball of twine recalls a tree branch, swallows' heavily stylized tails mimic ripples in a pond)...idyllic scenes unfold as summer approaches: mother and son gather sticks for a shelter...craft a wind sock, and put on rubber boots and go canoeing....McClure's deceptively simple work carries unexpected visual force and real pleasure. Ages 4-up." — Publishers Weekly

The seasons change, but through them all, Mommy is a soft, warm kiss. In this lovely book, a girl expresses her love for her mother through child-hearted metaphor. Whether making sand castles during summer, sewing Halloween costumes in the fall, or splashing in puddles on a rainy spring day, the fun never stops. The bond between mother and daughter is captured in lovely, rhyming text with rich, colorful illustrations—and with a special greeting card inside, kids can show their mommies just how much they love spending time together. The perfect book for Mother's Day.

"A towheaded girl uses metaphors to express what her mother is to her. On the beach, she's 'a buried treasure' ... on Thanksgiving, 'Mommy is a yummy smell / of pumpkin pie, so sweet' ...Smith's sunny acrylic and watercolor illustrations are sweetly affectionate" — Publishers Weekly
