KIT BAKKE, author of Miss Alcott's E-Mail, TGIF at the Leavenworth Library (Presentation)

Miss Alcott's E-Mail
Kit Bakke

Kit Bakke's book Miss Alcott's E-Mail was called by the Boston Globe "A whirlwind exchange of ideas about reform and revolution." Louisa May Alcott was an independent thinker, civil war nurse, activist, champion of women's rights, and a neighbor and friend of Emerson and Thoreau. Alcott's novels were written to support her parents and siblings, who would otherwise have lived in extreme poverty. "Yours for reforms of all kinds," Louisa Alcott signed her letters. And so is Kit Bakke, it seems, beginning with this imaginative construction for a biography - in which Kit emails Miss Alcott about issues of the day - and Miss Alcott emails back.

How can you capture oral history -- in all its depth, breadth, and personality? An oral history is built from structured conversations that gather information available from no other source. Oral histories are not about facts that a writer can find in newspaper archives or historical texts. Oral histories document what the subject remembers, with all the color and idiosyncratic character each person brings to his/her life experience. This workshop will cover tips and techniques for preparing for and conducting the interview, and discuss potential pitfalls such as accuracy, silence, and libel.

Memoir is a form of literature that, like poetry, invites the reader deeper into the experience of reflection. In this workshop we will focus on "voice;" that is, the style, tempo, and structure of our narrative. We will learn to draw from the writer's toolbox to help structure our stories, whether choosing personal essay, adventure, journal, or narrative. Through writing exercises and sharing our work, we will come away with a solid understanding of how to create our story.

This One is Mine
Maria Semple

Maria Semple spent her first two years of life in Spain where her father wrote the pilot for the TV series Batman. After graduating from Barnard College, Maria sold a movie script to Twentieth Century Fox. Thus began a fifteen-year career in television, writing for shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Ellen, Saturday Night Live, Mad About You and Arrested Development. But then Maria decided to resist Hollywood and return to her dream of novel-writing. Maria's first novel This One Is Mine, is a compassionate and wickedly funny satire about our need for more - and the often disastrous choices we make in the name of happiness.

Honolulu

Honolulu by Alan Brennert  $14.99

Just released in paperback: Honolulu, selected as "One of the Best Books of 2009" by The Washington Post, and winner of Elle's Lettres 2009 Grand Prix for Fiction. From the bestselling author of Moloka'i comes the irresistible story of a young immigrant bride in the days when Honolulu was a ramshackle town.

"In Korea in those days, newborn girls were not deemed important enough to be graced with formal names, but were instead given nicknames, which often reflected the parents' feelings on the birth of a daughter: I knew a girl named Anger, and another called Pity. As for me, my parents named me Regret."

In 1914, instead of the affluent young husband and chance at an education that she has been promised, a young "picture bride" is quickly married off to a poor, embittered laborer who takes his frustrations out on his new wife. Renaming herself Jin, she makes her own way in this strange land, finding both opportunity and prejudice. With the help of three of her fellow picture brides, Jin prospers along with her adopted city, now growing from a small territorial capital into the great multicultural city it is today. With its passionate knowledge of people and places in Hawai'i far off the tourist track, Honolulu is most of all the spellbinding tale of four women in a new world, united by dreams, disappointment, sacrifices, and friendship.

Praise

"A moving, multilayered epic by a master of historical fiction, in which one immigrant's journey helps us understand our nation's "becoming." — San Francisco Chronicle

"[A] sweeping, epic novel...Brennert weaves the true stories of early Hawaii into his fictional tale, and many of the captivating people Jin encounters are real...Let's hope Brennert follows up this second novel with a third and continues to capture this intriguing and little-explored segment of American history in beautifully told stories." — Library Journal (starred review)

"Brennert's lush tale of ambition, sacrifice, and survival is immense in its dramatic scope yet intimate in its emotive detail." — Booklist

Diet For A Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It

Diet For A Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It
By Anna Lappé  $24.00

If we're serious about the climate crisis, says Lappé, we have to talk about food.

While you may not think "global warming" when you sit down to dinner, our tangled web of global food—from Pop Tarts packaged in Tennessee and eaten in Texas to pork chops raised in Poland, with feed from Brazil, shipped to South Korea—contributes to as much as one-third of the global warming effect. Livestock alone is associated with more emissions than all of the world's transportation combined. Move over Hummer. Say hello to the hamburger.

With seven principles for a climate—friendly diet and success stories from sustainable food advocates around the globe, Lappé dishes up strategies and stirring inspiration to bring to life food that's better for people and the planet. An engaging call to action, a spirited call for a food system for tomorrow, Diet for a Hot Planet delivers a hopeful message during this troubling time.

About the Author

Anna Lappé is the coauthor of the nationally bestselling Hope's Edge with her mother, Frances Moore Lappé, and Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen with eco-chef Bryant Terry. Named one of Time magazine's "eco" Who's Who, Lappé is a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund. She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and daughter.

The Night Fairy

The Night Fairy By Laura Amy Schlitz  $16.99
illustrated by Angela Barrett
Age 7 and up

Just released! From Newbery Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz and world-renowned illustrator Angela Barrett comes an exhilarating new adventure — and a thoroughly original fairy who is a true force of nature.

What would happen to a fairy if she lost her wings and could no longer fly? Flory, a young night fairy no taller than an acorn and still becoming accustomed to her wings — wings as beautiful as those of a luna moth — is about to find out.

What she discovers is that the world is very big and very dangerous. But Flory is fierce and willing to do whatever it takes to survive. If that means telling others what to do — like Skuggle, a squirrel ruled by his stomach — so be it. Not every creature, however, is as willing to bend to Flory's demands.

Readers will delight in Flory's resourcefulness in finding food, clothing, and transportation and enjoy her brash personality, which softens as she makes friends. Culminating with Flory's brave act of saving a hummingbird, this story reveals how handicaps can be overcome through quick thinking and determination.

Cloud Tea Monkeys

Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham   $15.99
illustrated by Juan Wijngaard
Age 4 and up

A Junior Library Guild Selection! Carnegie Medalist Mal Peet and his wife, Graham, team up for a captivating, lushly illustrated tale evoking a Chinese legend.

Tashi lives in a tiny village at the foot of the mountains, below the tea plantations where her mother works. When her mother falls ill, Tashi goes alone to the plantation, hoping to earn money for the doctor. But she is far too small to harvest the tender shoots, and her clumsy efforts anger the cruel Overseer. She is desolate, until — chack-chack-chack — something extraordinary happens.

Inspired by a centuries-old legend of tea-picking monkeys, here is a richly told tale full of vivid characters: the heartless Overseer, the enigmatic Royal Tea Taster, and, far away, an Empress with a penchant for tea.

About the Author

Carnegie Medalist Mal Peet and his wife Elspeth Graham live in Devon, England. Mal Peet's first novel Keeper, a seamless blend of magic realism and exhilarating soccer action, won the 2004 Branford Boase Award and the Bronze Nestlé Smarties Book Award, and was selected as an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults. Tamar, his second book for young adults, is a riveting novel of World War Two, and his Penalty is a follow-up novel to Keeper.
