Zainab Salbi

Zainab Salbi, a survivor of war, and author of Between Two Worlds and The Other Side of War: Women's Stories of Survival and Hope has a passion. Salbi has devoted her life to rebuilding communities after war, one woman at a time. Tens of thousands have responded to Salbi's call, helping families rebuild their lives in the wake of war through Salbi's organization, Women for Women International. Ms. Salbi and her organization have received numerous national and international awards and honors. Time calls Women for Women International "a lifeline for women in war-torn countries."

Salbi will speak at Sleeping Lady Retreat Center January 8 at 7:00 p.m, with a book-signing following the program. Proceeds from ticket sales, and 10% of book sales, will benefit the YWCA's Homeless Women's Program. Contact Sleeping Lady for ticket information.

JACK NISBET, author of The Collector: David Douglas and the Natural History of the Northwest, A Book For All Seasons (book-signing)

Co-sponsored by North Central Regional Library system and A Book For All Seasons. Join famed naturalist and author Jack Nisbet for an adventurous step back into the history of the Pacific Northwest through the eyes of David Douglas.

"Jack Nisbet's brisk, thrilling account allows us to walk, ride and paddle along with David Douglas, the tireless 19th-century Scotsman whose name is attached to Cascadia's iconic fir. Nisbet takes us on the ultimate naturalist's tour of a largely untamed, unnamed, and unknown Northwest, land of giant salmon, circling condors, and 14-inch pine cones. What nature-lover doesn't wish they could see the region as it was when explorers first arrived? Well, here you go." — Knute Berger, author of Pugetopolis

"Men ahead of their time wrestle with the fabric of the universe. Flaming's debut ushers us into a mystifying world, but its intriguing premise and inherent mystery are impossible to resist. Marrying poetic prose with hints of steampunk aesthetics to an arcane, time-wrenching plot that includes a healthy dose of wistful romance, the author unleashes an absorbing adventure about warring scientists, lost princesses and the genius who created modern New York City. A marvelous fable about the worlds beneath our feet and the conspiracies that turn our heads." — Kirkus Review (starred)

The Weather Outside Is Frightening

Oh, the weather outside is frightening ... brrr! ... where is the manger in Leavenworth today?

Through the holidays and beyond, Leavenworth offers food, cheer, warmth and hope to those in need. This holiday season, Community Cupboard delivered holiday baskets to over 200 families — about 800 people, 10% of our Upper Valley population.

Community Cupboard is just one part of the MEND umbrella, which also includes Cornerstore, Share, an emergency shelter, and Leavenworth's free medical clinic. MEND also helps those in crisis with heat bills and rent payments, and connects them with agencies that can provide longer-term support and counseling to help folks get back on the road to success.

Patty Hebert

MEND Board member and Community Cupboard volunteer Patty Hebert has travelled to crisis areas with the Red Cross, for example after Hurricane Katrina. Patty can't say enough good about local service organizations like Community Cupboard. These locally-grounded links, she says, are what allows the Red Cross to provide help quickly and effectively.

And what's unique about our wonderful community here in Leavenworth," says Patty, "is that our community does remember and give throughout the year, not just at holidays. It is amazing how generous this community is, and how much time and talent people give to those in need, all year long. Our schools, our churches, our business community, our medical professionals — wow! It makes me so proud to live here."

"We're the only food bank in Washington open six days a week, and it's because of Community Cupboard's retail front end. So when you shop at Community Cupboard," Patty says, "you're getting more than just affordable, quality, recycled clothing. Your money goes right back into serving the community."

From Community Cupboard, and all the great organizations of the MEND umbrella, a huge thank you to our wonderful community for caring and for being there, through rain, sleet, and snow, even after the Christmas tree is out by the curb. Thank you, Leavenworth!

Visit the Upper Valley MEND web site for more information.

What are Community Cupboard volunteers reading?

Theresa D-Litzenberger

Community Cupboard and Free Clinic volunteer Theresa D-Litzenberger loves The Wise Heart: A guide to the universal teachings of Buddhist Psychology. "I was assigned to read this book for school," Theresa says, "and I loved it so much, I've recommended it and given it as a gift to many, many friends." No matter your religious views, Theresa recommends The Wise Heart because it provides a vision of radiant human dignity, unlimited human capacity for love, joy and communion with life, and unshakeable freedom - and a practical path for realizing these things in your own life. "The writing is beautiful, almost like poetry," Theresa said, "and also very clear and understandable. This book really spoke to me. It's called The Wise Heart and it really does touch your heart. It opens you up to new aspects of yourself that you might not have felt before."

John Agnew

Community Cupboard volunteer and MEND board member John Agnew says everybody should read Hot, Flat, and Crowded: why we need a green revolution -- and how it can renew America. "This book is really consciousness-changing," says John, "and very timely. And it's a pleasure to read -- Friedman has a very clear, lucid, entertaining writing style. I've recommended it to everyone in my family."

"Cogent analyses of the most important developments of our time … a convincing case for the green revolution" says USA Today. "A compelling manifesto that deserves a wide reading" says The Boston Globe. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning Thomas Friedman, Hot, Flat and Crowded is fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge — and the promise — of the future. John says Friedman is one of those rare authors that can deliver this message in an entertaining and hopeful way. John concludes, "It's very readable, very informative, and makes the case so clearly about resource usage, particularly carbon-based fuels. It will clearly explain issues you were likely wishing you understood better. It's a fabulous book, and extremely important."
