Upcoming Events

Saturday, March 7th, 10:00AM - 1:00PM
"Stop Making Sense: Using Subtext in Dialogue," with Kay Kenyon

Kay Kenyon

Dialogue in fiction is hard to get right. Readers have a finely tuned aversion to dialogue that's too obvious, lacking in nuance, or devoid of earned emotion. In Kay Kenyon's workshop "Stop Making Sense: Using Subtext in Dialogue" you'll learn the pitfalls of making too much sense: the beginner's error of spot-on dialogue. Discover how subtext can up the ante in your fiction. Experiment with buried truths, game-playing, bald-faced lies, and other ways to avoid saying what you mean, and thereby reveal the truth.

Free Event!

From 2:00-4:00pm, stop by ABFAS when Kay Kenyon will be signing copies of her trilogy, The Entire and the Rose, an epic Sci-Fantasy series the Washington Post calls "compelling ... a splendid fantasy quest."

Testimonial from Rufus Woods, Editor and Publisher of the Wenatchee World

Rufus Woods

One of the great treasures in the Upper Valley is A Book For All Seasons. Every time I visit is a journey of discovery, which is a testament to the care with which the store purchases a wide variety of interesting books. I have yet to spend time in the store and not find something I wanted to read. I also appreciate the personal service, the attention to detail and knowledge of the staff, not to mention the proximity to good coffee!

I make a conscious effort to spend money locally, particularly with independent businesses like A Book For All Seasons because I know the money I spend recycles many times throughout the community. Local companies are committed to the success of the community in a very profound way and the owners give of their time and money to support important local causes.

Best regards,
Rufus Woods

Rufus Woods Review

Book Pick From Rufus Woods, Editor and Publisher
of the Wenatchee World

The Politics of Hope: Reviving the Dream of Democracy by Donna Zajonc

The Politics of Hope

I found The Politics of Hope to be a fascinating book. The author is a former legislator from Oregon who ran unsuccessfully for Secretary of State and then managed a campaign for a gubernatorial candidate.

Donna describes four stages of political development:

  1. Anarchy
  2. Traditionalism (divisive, winner-take-all, the ends justify the means approach)
  3. Resignation (where reasonable people are so disgusted with the process that they focus on local issues that they can have an impact on), and finally
  4. Conscious leader, which describes individuals who are connected to their values and who see the world as interconnected and interdependent.

It's an inspiration for those of us who desire to make a difference in life.

Jackie Haskins

Jackie's March book pick: young adult and children's versions of Three Cups of Tea.

Do the children you love ever wonder: can one person really make a difference in this world?
Share the story of the Three Cups of Tea with the young people in your life.

As near-dead climber Greg Mortenson was nursed back to life in a Pakistani village, Greg observed the village's children sitting outdoors, scratching their lessons in the dirt with sticks. The village could not afford the $1-a-day salary to hire a teacher. When he left the village, Greg promised that he would return to build them a school. In pursuit of his goal, Greg has survived an armed kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, repeated death threats, and wrenching separations from his wife and children. Three Cups of Tea: Young Readers AdditionYet his success speaks for itself. He has founded the Central Asia Institute, and built over 78 schools in remote Central Asia that educate over 24,000 children each year.

Three Cups Of Tea has now been released in a young adult version. The story is told in a manner engaging to young people. Many beautiful photographs, a glossary, maps, and a time line enhance the learning experience.

Listen to the Wind

This compelling story has also been released in a picture book version, Listen to the Wind. The award-winning illustrator, Susan L. Roth, used a collage technique to create illustrations that are textured, vibrant, eco-friendly, and pay homage to the traditional art of the region.

"Three Cups of Tea is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson's dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it's proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world." — Tom Brokaw
