"Polar Bear, Why is Your World Melting?"- Robert Wells' new book helps children understand science!

Robert Wells

On November 8th from 1:00-3:00pm, children's book author and illustrator Robert Wells will be at ABFAS on Teachers' Appreciation Day with his latest book, Polar Bear, Why is Your World Melting? Those already familiar with Wells' books know that he has a way of making concepts easy to understand.

Sadly, scientists predict that two-thirds of the world's polar bears will disappear by 2050. As adults, global warming as a constant concern wasn't something that we grew up with, but for this generation it certainly is and this is an ideal book to answer their questions. Through colorful drawings and simple language, children can learn why the world is getting warmer and what can be done to help keep the Earth cool.

Aki Iba

Aki Talks

Aki Iba Reviews:
Army Of The Republic by Stuart Archer Cohen

In the near future America is no longer what it was. Water is being privatized for sale to citizens and the government is more corrupt than it has ever been leaving little power for the people. But the people are fighting to gain their power back through revolutionary groups who either stage peaceful protests, or military style campaigns, And after the unsanctioned execution of billionaire and leading water privatization exec. John Polling is carried out by the army of the republic things really start to get out of control.

Army of the Republic

The story follows "Lando" a militant revolutionary and one of the founders of "The Army Of The Republic" as well as Emily Cortright one of the founders of DNN (Democracy Northwest) a leading peaceful political activist group as they try to make changes to take back the power. And also James Sands who is a CEO of Water Solutions and currently working to finish "Cascadia" the biggest water contract yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters we're very deep and very real seeming. It also helped that it took place mostly in Seattle and the surrounding area since I grew up there. The story was thought provoking and action packed. Although I found a few key elements slightly predictable it still left me guessing enough that I had a hard time putting it down. Also the political aspect of the book had me questioning the current direction of the United States, and there was enough personal drama between characters to satisfy that aspect as well. This story made me want to pick up a brick and join the revolution (maybe not the best thing for a veteran of the "battle in seattle"). But what the hell... Fight The Power!

Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present by Douglas Keister

Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present

I just finished Michael B. Oren's book "Power, Faith and Fantasy" [Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present]. I was struggling with the roots of the Middle East animosity toward the U.S. and wanted something that would bring it together in one volume. Oren's work was certainly the answer. It focuses on America's relationship with the Middle East since 1776 but in his telling, you are given a very comprehensive view of the problem from multiple perspectives. I would rank it the best history book I have ever read. The players are many and varied and the detail is impressive. Yet it reads like one of the 1001 Nights as it weaves together fantastic lands, epic events and unforgettable characters that are shaping our world today. Highly recommended as a start to further reading.
The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11In fact I was so motivated to learn more that I am half way through with Lawrence Wright's "Looming Tower" [The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11]. It is very interesting and perhaps I will write a review of it for another edition. All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror by Stephen KinzerAfter that I have a copy of "All the Shah's Men" [All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror by Stephen Kinzer]. That should keep me busy for a while.

Lisa Wells

The Scribe Behind Our Newsletter

Meet Lisa Wells, the bright spirit behind your monthly newsletter and part of the marketing triad, Pat, Lilly-Anne and Lisa. Born in Appalachian coal country, the grand-daughter of a coal miner, Lisa can be a bit shy, like the songbirds she enjoys watching and feeding.

"Blue Moon Of Kentucky" is the ring on this sushi-loving, Kentucky-girl's cell phone. Her favorite song? The first song she and her husband Rainier ever danced to, a James Taylor song, still brings tears to her eyes -- we'll leave it to her to reveal which one.

Lisa left rainy Port Townsend and the Wooden Boat School for a little cabin way up the Entiat Valley. Long term, she and Rainier hope to re-locate to their currently undeveloped land in Leavenworth.

This month, Lisa and Rainier welcome his parents into their home. Rainier's parents leave behind 20 acres in Missouri to join us here: just in time for winter!

Lisa is a dog lover, photographer, writer, and self-described realist. Like all of us in the ABFAS community, Lisa loves books. She's a ravenous reader of Russian literature, poetry, non-fiction and much more. When Lisa is finally ready to share her own work, look out: her depth of feeling and wide-ranging experience are bound to produce an amazing synthesis. Meanwhile, enjoy reading the book world happenings she helps us share with each other every month.

Chumstick Liberation Front (CLF)

Watch for CLF and the Soulful Sounds of the Sharpes!

Leavenworth locals and regular ABFAS customers know brothers Stephen and Nat Sharpe well. Stephen manages ABFAS and though Nat once managed the ABFAS used book section, you'll now find that the wine of Eagle Creek Winery demands all of his time now that d'Vinery has opened its doors. What many locals also know is that one of the best and most popular bands in Central Washington is the Chumstick Liberation Front (CLF) and two of CLF's founding members are the Sharpe brothers! If you stick around the area for long, there's a good chance you'll get to hear CLF play. They've played venues from Steven's Pass to Munchen Haus and headlining events such as the 2007 Wenatchee Valley Salmon Festival just makes their fan base continue to grow.

CLF began four years ago with four members that are still involved in the band today. Stephen sings and plays guitar and Nat provides back-up vocals in addition to playing harmonica, tambourine, and claves. Sergio Cuevas is the band's drummer and Mike King handles the hand percussion; they're both back-up vocalists as well. Recently, two new members joined the band, Wes Moreland as lead guitarist and Kevin Fox on bass, and Stephen spoke highly of both: "They have really completed our sound - I think we found the last piece we were looking for."

When asked about the style of music they play, Nat has been attributed with coming up with the best description so far, "Reggae, ska, AfroPop, Pan-American, folk music... eclectic music that makes you want to move!" Whatever the style, they're in demand. The Halloween gig at Uncle Uli's is always a great night and they were recently the feature band at the Sleeping Lady's 80th Anniversary Winter Sports Club Event. On November 15th, they'll be performing at the Harvest Fest benefit at the Tierra Learning Center, "an Africa Unveiled event", raising funds for children's education in Africa and if you come out to The Crow in Cashmere on the evening of November 29th, you'll find CLF doing what they do best, playing into the night and shaking things up!

According to Stephen, "I really am feeling good about the band right now; our sound is really tight. All of the effort that we've put into practice is really beginning to show." So what else is in store for CLF? After a bit of recording on KOHO radio this summer, they've set their sights on studio recording this winter. They'll be going into the studio to record some of their own music, their first CD. When Stephen mentioned the session, you could hear enthusiasm mixed with measured optimism in his voice as he spoke. No need to be too cautious Stephen, just keep doing what you love and keep doing it well... In the meantime, we'll all be watching for your next show and a CLF CD!

Pat Rutledge

Pat's Corner

The leaves were there yesterday hanging heavy on the trees; bright yellow and deep burgundy, tinting my room with happiness. But today they have left branches and twigs bare-naked due to the driving wind and rain. Although under the weather and not in the mood to party, I drugged and dragged myself out last night, to hear and see three of my five sons' bands playing for a wild Halloween crowd. I loved the energy and the beat, the sound and the freaky costumes but I was so happy to get home and tunnel under the covers, my head propped with pillows and a book in my hands.

Pretty soon the snow will be flying, holiday madness will embrace us and books will linger a little longer between readings on my nightstand and end tables. But for the next few short weeks before Thanksgiving, there's a respite before the flurry of unceasing activity where I can steal hours alone reading and savoring books.

Maybe I am feeling the uncertainty of the times; the election right around the corner, the stock market's erratic behavior. I've noticed that I've moved certain books to the bottom of my reading pile-the more serious tomes of wisdom on global warming, green living, and economic quandaries-and I find myself instead reaching for titles that bring me closer to the beautiful side of life through evocative language, good story and shear pleasure. And it's not because I'm trying to escape these hard times--no, it's just nice to be reminded that there's more to life than gloom.

November always sends me scampering through the cookbook nook ferreting out yet another pumpkin pie recipe and some new twist on sweet potatoes and Brussel sprouts. I get lost in flavors and aromas as I imagine creating this year's quintessential Thanksgiving feast. If you come into ABFAS now through November 15th you can enjoy our email newsletter treat of 15% off any cookbook purchases. Just tell the staff you read it in the newsletter. Have a luscious Thanksgiving feast. See you in the cookbook nook.

Jipkiss and the Brilliant Bibliophiles @ A Book For All Seasons want to thank you again for your support! We'll See You Next Month!
