Time for a Chilling Tale!

Image Oh... The Horror !

It's that time again, so how about reading (or re-reading) a spooky classic or two!

In 1963, Alfred Hitchcock adapted Daphne du Maurier's story The Birds into a horror film about birds attacking people in a coastal town in California. The movie struck fear in all who dared to watch.
Though you won't find a copy of du Maurier's The Birds readily available at most bookstores, did you know that A Book for All Seasons is always happy to do an out of print book search for just such titles? Ask us to look for a copy of du Maurier's short stories and we just might be able to track down a copy of The Birds for you!

For a bit of the macabre now, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a great read to make you pull the covers up over your head.

Then again, Bram Stoker's Dracula is always a dark tale worth an evening or two of looking over your shoulder and glancing twice at shadows.

Perhaps upon some 'midnight dreary', you'll find that a bit of Edgar Allen Poe has just the right frightening tale to get you into that Halloween spirit.

Click on the links below, give us a call, or stop in to pick up a tale of the night and then don't forget to lock your doors and let the stories chill and thrill you to the bone!

A Pig in Provence - Good Food and Simple Pleasures in the South of France by Georgeanne Brennan

Image A Pig in Provence — Good Food and Simple Pleasures in the South of France is Georgeanne Brennan's story of living in France, beginning in the 70's when she and her first husband moved to Provence to raise goats and to make goat cheese. One thing that she found was that when she asked the locals how to make cheese, they all gave her very simple instructions so after taking their instructions and adding her own touch, everyone loved the results!
They eventually moved away, but she returned with her second husband and this time she learned quite a bit more from the locals. She not only learned how to cook, but she also learned how to hunt truffles, the shepherds' ancient practice of transhumance, and how each community is not only based around food, but also on the pride that goes along with it.
There are recipes throughout the book and though I haven't tried any of them yet, they look wonderful. If you like French food and all things French, I'm sure that you'll like this book.
(And if you speak a little French, it will be helpful too!)

Young Adult Fiction Review

Klev Peckham reviews:
Ranger's Apprentice, Book One: The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan this month!

This book is set in medieval times and it's about a fifteen year old boy named Will. Will's an orphan who's mother died at birth. His father was a great warrior. In the beginning, they have "The Choosing" where they decide who each orphan will apprentice with and what job they will learn, but on Choosing Day, no one took him in.
There is a mysterious Ranger named Halt in the town. Everyone's kind of scared of him. Halt walked up and put a note on the Baron's desk that no one saw. Will wanted to know what it said so later that night, he climbed the wall of the castle to try to read the note when Halt grabbed his wrist so that he couldn't see. Halt took him in to see the Baron and Halt told the Baron that Will needed discipline.
They decide that Will can be a Ranger's apprentice.
Rangers are real mysterious. They're like spies and they protect the castle. They're real special because there's only fifty Rangers - one for each of the fifty fiefdoms.
At first, Will is unsure, but he's excited too. He asks what a Ranger does, but Halt tells him not to ask what a Ranger does, but what a Ranger's Apprentice does. He has to do a lot of housework and stuff like that at first, but then later they start training with weapons, knives, throwing, blocking, target shooting - lots of practicing.
I like this book because it's exciting and has lots of action. I think it would be fun to be a Ranger's apprentice.
This book is the first book in the Ranger's Apprentice series and I'm reading the second book now. It's called Ranger's Apprentice, Book Two: The Burning Bridge. I think other people that like books with lots of action will like these books too.

Where in the Wild? Camoflaged Creatures Concealed... and Revealed

Where in the Wild? Camoflaged Creatures Concealed... and Revealed
with Ear-Tickling Poems by David M. Schwartz and Yael Schy and Eye Tricking Photos by Dwight Kuhn

As a young child, I remember sitting in the dentist's waiting room and reading the "Highlights" magazines. I'd go straight for the page where you look for the hidden objects in the picture and after all of these years (I won't say how many) and after looking at this book, I can only say that we've come a long way.
This book is not only still fun for children, it is truly a beauty. It is filled with lovely, full color photographs of wildlife, naturally camouflaged amongst the leaves, flowers, or meadows in which they live.
Open each page to find a light-hearted poem, next to a photo of a beach or perhaps a tree trunk. An animal is also there, but can you see it? Open the flap and the secret is revealed! An added extra is that underneath the flap, you'll find a full page of fascinating information about the animal that you just found. From tree frogs to fawns, readers can learn about the animal, their environment, and the reason for this natural camouflage in the wild.
Once you read this book with your child or your favorite little friend, take a walk in the woods — you just may find yourself slowing down and looking just a bit closer at the world around you!

Reviews from the Cookbook Nook!

Dave Varner reviews Bubby's Homemade Pies by Ron Silver and Jen Bervin
The new cookbook Bubby's Homemade Pies by Ron Silver and Jen Bervin (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2007, $29.95) is a great choice for those striving to make the perfect pie. The book opens with a very interesting chapter entitled "Crust Basics: An Illustrated Primer". It leads you through the dough making process step by step and explains the science behind it in layman's terms. I found that understanding the reasons behind the various steps and ingredient choices to be both interesting and instructive. The crust is undoubtedly the hardest part of pie making and any information that better illustrates the logic behind the process is worthwhile reading. After all, baking is both an art and a science.
I also like the authors' philosophy: "to make simple foods from scratch using quality ingredients".
I felt an honest review of this book should include a hands-on test of one of the recipes. I chose the Chicken Pot Pie on page 145. I followed the process very closely and it took about three hours, start to finish. Although my technique needs some fine tuning, the pie turned out fine.
I recommend this book to serious cooks but a basic knowledge of baking will serve you well.
Bon Appetit!

Robin Robertson - Swithering - page 4

Ghost of a Garden

Sometimes I discover I have gone downstairs,
crossed the grass and found myself
in here: the tool-shed,
caught in a lash of brambles, bindweed
and tall ivied trees like pipecleaners. It looks out,
vacantly, on a garden rum to seed:
the lost tennis court, grown-over benches,
a sunken barbecue snagged with blown roses.
The courtyard walls are full of holes the swallows
try to sew, in and out of them like open doors.
In the corner of the shed my father is weeping
and I cannot help him because he is dead.

Robin Robertson- Swithering - page 20.

From the publisher: To "swither" means to suffer indecision or doubt, but there is no faltering in these poems. Robin Robertson has written a book of remarkable cohesion and range-from raw, exposed poems about the end of childhood to erotically charged lyrics about the ends of desire, from a brilliant retelling of the metamorphosis and death of Actaeon to the final freeing of the waters in "Holding Proteus." At times somber, at times exultant, Robertson's poems are always firmly rooted in the world we see, the life we experience: original, precise, and startlingly clear.
This unique collection of poetry, Swithering, is available for $16.00.

Toss a bit of poetry lovingly into your cart! - Swithering is only $16.00

A Frightening Idea from a Scientific Mind

Image Do you have a FEAR of Physics?

A Physicist, an engineer, and a psychologist are called in as consultants to a dairy farm whose production has been below par. Each is given time to inspect the details of the operation before making a report.
The first to be called is the engineer, who states: "The size of the stalls for the cattle should be decreased. Efficiency could be improved if the cows were more closely packed, with a net allotment of 275 cubic feet per cow. Also, the diameter of the milking tubes should be increased by 4 percent to allow for a greater average flow rate during the milking periods."
The next to report is the psychologist, who proposes:
"The inside of the barn should be painted green. This is a more mellow color than brown and should help induce greater milk flow. Also, more trees should be planted in the fields to add diversity to the scenery for the cattle during grazing, to reduce boredom."
Finally, the physicist is called upon. He asks for a blackboard and then draws a circle. he begins: "Assume the cow is a sphere..."
This old joke, if not very funny, does illustrate how - at least metaphorically - physicists picture the world. The set of tools physicists have to describe nature is limited. Most of the modern theories you read about began life as simple models by physicists who didn't know how else to start to solve a problem.

Excerpt from Fear of Physics - A Guide for the Perplexed by Lawrence M. Krauss - Page 3.

The book Fear of Physics - A Guide for the Perplexed by Lawrence J. Krauss was a cult classic fifteen years ago as it was one of the first books to let the the "Regular Joe" in on just how physicists think, but in 2007, this book was revised and re-released and a new preface by the author was added. An excellent, fully updated guide!

From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time - Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban. Image The Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen

Deep in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest is a small mill town called Commonwealth, conceived as a haven for workers weary of exploitation. For the adopted son of the town's founder, it is a haven in another sense; as the first place in his life he's had a loving family to call his own. And yet, amidst the backdrop of a world war raging, another shadow has fallen across the region in the form of a deadly illness striking down vast swaths of surrounding communities.
Inspired by a little-known historical footnote regarding towns that quarantined themselves during the 1918 epidemic, The Last Town on Earth is a remarkably moving and accomplished debut.

Image Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned thirty, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want — a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world - all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly medicine man and also fell in love the best way — unexpectedly. An intensely articulate and moving memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment and stop trying to live in imitation of society's ideals. It is certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change.

Pat's Corner

I have often wondered about books in translation; why I have enjoyed so many of them. Could it be that to render the author's voice authentically, the translator must capture every intended nuance of voice more carefully than if writing for himself? Whatever the reason, Out Stealing Horses written in Norwegian by Per Petterson and translated into English by Anne Born, is a wondrous book, which has stolen my heart and will steal yours too.
Petterson tells the story of recently widowed, Trond who retreats to a cabin in the far east of Norway, to be alone. In stark prose, which reads like poetry, Petterson weaves Trond's past with his present, laying out a tapestry of personal and global events, which is a wonder to behold.
Before his success as a writer, Petterson was a bookseller in Oslo, Norway for twelve years. As such, he found a small U. S. independent publisher, Graywolf Press, and in his own words, "fell flat for their books and imported them to Norway, read them myself and sold them." Ironically, it is this same small press, twenty years later, which has published Out Stealing Horses.
It doesn't often happen that a small independent non-profit press has such a success story. As an independent bookseller it is exciting to be part of the bringing Out Stealing Horses to my customers.
