Three Author Book Buzz! A Spiritual Awakening in the Siberian Wilderness; Helping Kids Choose Healthy Foods; and a Fresh, New, Wise-Cracking, Teen-Lit Voice.

Meet three new authors, and enter our free prize-drawing! Jon Turk, long-time kayak adventurer, signs his new release about spiritual awakening in the Siberian wilderness. Beverly Pressey, author of Simple and Savvy Strategies for Creating Healthy Eaters, shows us that raising children with healthy emotional relationships with food can be fun — and simpler than expected! Amber Kizer writes two very different young adult series: the Gert Garibaldi series, a contemporary, frank, and funny journey of an American high school student through the perils of growing up; and paranormal Meridian, following a girl who shepherds dying souls to the afterlife.

Jon Turk

Jon Turk

In The Raven's Gift, noted scientist and kayak adventurer Jon Turk undertakes a journey of spiritual healing. Turk has kayaked around Cape Horn and paddled across the Pacific Ocean, retracing the voyages of ancient peoples. But the strangest trip he ever took was his journey as a man of science into the realm of the spiritual.

The Raven's Gift: A Scientist, a Shaman, and Their Remarkable Journey Through the Siberian Wilderness

In a remote Siberian village, an elderly shaman named Moolynaut invoked the help of a Spirit Raven to mend Jon Turk's fractured pelvis. When the healing was complete, Jon was able to walk without pain. Finding no rational explanation, Jon sought understanding by traversing the frozen tundra where Moolynaut was born, camping with bands of reindeer herders, and recording stories of their lives and spirituality.

Framed by high adventure across the vast and forbidding Siberian landscape, The Raven's Gift creates a vision of natural and spiritual realms interwoven by one man's awakening.

Jon Turk is the author of twenty-five environmental and earth science text books and two previous adventure travel books. He is a world-class adventurer whose expeditions are backed by Necky Kayaks, for whom he serves as a national spokesman. He writes frequently for many different magazines and alternates his time between Fernie, British Columbia and Darby, Montana.

Beverly Pressey

Beverly Pressey

How do you ensure your child's health and interest in a variety of foods without fighting or spending all day in the kitchen? Registered Dietician and mom Beverly Pressey gives parents simple, constructive tips and information to create healthy, smart eaters.

In Simple and Savvy Strategies for Creating Healthy Eaters, you'll learn more than nutrition basics for children. You'll discover how and when to introduce solid food, how to continue introducing new, healthy foods into your growing child's diet and how to deal with all of your child's food issues, challenges or demands.

Simple and Savvy Strategies for Creating Healthy Eaters

Beverly coaches parents through menu planning, deciphering nutrition labels, once-a-week grocery shopping, food safety and how to handle those "fun foods" on holidays and special occasions. Beverly will help you gain the confidence of knowing you're feeding your child appropriately and are providing the environment and responses children need to learn to eat well. Use Simple and Savvy Strategies for Creating Healthy Eaters as a guidebook, a reference manual, and a shared experience between parents.

As a parent of young children and with over twelve years experience in the field, Beverly understands the pressures today's parents face. Beverly provides a reasonable, practical approach, and shows us that raising children with healthy emotional relationships with food can be fun — and simpler than expected.

Beverly is a Registered Dietician with a Masters Degree in Nutrition. She has worked for Seattle - King County Health Department and also in child care and child care catering. She is currently the Nutritionist for the Infant-Parent Lab at Bellevue Community College, and at the Jewish Community Center's Parenting Center. Beverly has taught and presented in many venues including Bastyr University, North Seattle Community College, Puget Consumer Cooperative and Seattle Conservation Corp. In 12 years of practice she has observed thousands of children eating in different environments and enjoying a wide variety of foods. She has a realistic understanding of infant/child eating patterns and behaviors, as well as the personal and emotional frustrations parents can experience around food and meal-time issues. Beverly currently lives in Washington with her two young children and her husband, Chris. Visit her on the web at www.creatinghealthyeaters.com.

Amber Kizer

Amber Kizer

Amber Kizer writes two very different young adult series. Her Gert Garibaldi series is contemporary, frank and funny, following an American high school student through the perils of growing up. The debut Gert novel, One Butt Cheek At A Time, was included in the NYPL Best Books for the Teen Age 2008 list.

Gert Garibaldi's Rants and Raves: One Butt Cheek at a Time

Fifteen-year-old Gert Garibaldi isn't one of those people who believe high school is the best part of life. She has a whole notebook full of rants about high school, and she's fully aware of how ridiculous the experience is, thank you very much. Gert just wants to survive the next three years. Ideally with Luscious Luke attached to her lips. With a stapler. Or something. But muddling through isn't easy — there are geriatric parents to deal with, the horror of homecoming festivities, "ed" (both sex and driving), and crushes. Frank, funny, and totally unique, Gert is ready to pull on the Pants of Life and start dancing.

"Spicy, aware. . . . Readers will be cheering Gert along as she learns to follow her instincts instead of her illusions," says School Library Journal.

Meridian

Kizer's Meridian, first in the Fenestra series, is paranormal, following a girl who shepherds dying souls to the afterlife. Meridian has always been surrounded by death. In her childhood, insects, mice, and salamanders burrowed into her bedclothes to die. On her sixteenth birthday, Meridian witnessed a deadly car crash, and her body exploded with the victims' pain. Meridian is a Fenestra, the half-angel, half-human link between the living and the dead. It's crucial that she learn how to transition human souls to the afterlife and preserve the balance between good and evil on earth. But Meridian and her love face great danger from the Aternocti, a band of dark forces who capture vulnerable souls on the brink of death and cause chaos. Dark, lovely, and lushly romantic, Meridian introduces a powerful heroine who will entrance readers.

"A little love, lots of adventure, and plenty of fun ... The story is fast paced, resulting in a quick read that teen girls will devour," says Voya. Meridian has been translated into German, Spanish, and Turkish.

Kizer has toured nationally, speaking at writers' conferences, on television and radio, to educators, and to teenage readers. She was selected to present breakout sessions at the NCTE Assembly on Adolescent Literature at the Philadelphia 2009 Conference. She lives in the Seattle area on a veritable Noah's Ark—without the big boat and only some of the rain. For more information, check out www.amberkizer.com.
