On Saturday, October 11th, look to the future with ABFAS as we welcome Brenda Cooper from 1:00 - 3:00pm with Reading the Wind, the latest in the "Silver Ship Saga".
As a futurist, Brenda Cooper is interested in how new technologies might change us and our world, particularly for the better. As an author, Brenda Cooper's latest science fiction novel takes you on a journey to a world of genetically altered beings and technically advanced societies - images manifested from the author's inquiring mind.
Reading the Wind: The colony planet of Fremont was supposed to be free of all genetically altered beings—a new home for a pure race. So when Chelo and her brother Joseph, along with two other genetically altered teenagers, were abandoned on Fremont, they were not welcome. They vowed to get off the planet by any means necessary. Joseph and the others managed to escape, but Chelo was left behind with her new found love, forced to live underground.
Joseph and the others find that their homeworld is full of vengeance. Believing that the people of Fremont killed the teenaged castaways, they sent a technologically advanced mercenary team to Fremont to eliminate the entire planet's population. With the help of Joseph's father, the youngsters head back to Fremont to try to save Chelo.
"Brenda Cooper tells a tale of a powerful brother and sister in a fight for their lives, offering insights along the way into the nature of courage and the hunger for community that burns in every human being. This is a lively book, full of colorful images and a memorable cast of human and animal characters, a worthy successor to The Silver Ship and the Sea."—Louise Marley
Reading the Wind follows The Silver Ship and the Sea. Brenda Cooper's first book, Building Harlequin's Moon, was written in conjunction with science fiction author Larry Niven.
