Events at A Book For All Seasons

We love to support our local authors and our events allow us to give something back to the community as well. We offer book signings, talks, readings, writing workshops, and meals with an author—often accompanied with a slide show.

Lewis Buzbee Comes to ABFAS for Teachers' Appreciation Night
Lewis Buzbee

Topping off our Teachers' Appreciation Night extravaganza is author and bibliophile extraordinaire, Lewis Buzbee!

Lewis Buzbee is a former bookseller, a former sales rep, and former publisher. He is also a teacher in the University of San Francisco M.F.A. Program for Writers, but what Lewis Buzbee is above of all is a life-long lover of books. On Teachers' Appreciation Night, we are pleased to have Lewis Buzbee at ABFAS along with two of his recent books. One just for you and that your kids will love! The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, takes his love of books and bookstores and mixes it with an abundance of history and insight, and the newly released middle reader Steinbeck's Ghost is a book that introduces young readers to the characters of John Steinbeck novels as the young man in the story sees them strangely coming to life around him.
Lewis's writing reflects his love of books. Come on out and meet Lewis and pick up a signed copy of one of his latest. Let Lewis share his love of books with you and your kids!

Lewis will also join us on November 9th from 11:00am-1:00pm to sign books, talk books, and spend a bit more time with us here at ABFAS!

The Yellow-lighted Bookshop

The Yellow Lighted Bookshop - A celebration of the unique experience of the bookstore - the smell and touch of books, getting lost in the deep canyons of shelves, and the silent community of readers. Woven throughout is a fascinating historical account of the bookseller trade - from the great Alexandria library with an estimated one million papyrus scrolls to Sylvia Beach's famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare & Co., that led to the extraordinary effort to publish and sell James Joyce's Ulysses. Rich with anecdotes, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop is the perfect choice for those who relish the enduring pleasures of spending an afternoon finding just the right book.

"You realize Buzbee just doesn't love books, he's besotted." — Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"A delectable feast... I cannot remember when I have read a book with such delight." — Paul Yamazaki, City Lights Bookstore

"Both anecdotal and eloquent...a tribute to those who crave the cozy confines of a bookshop, a place to be 'alone among others' and savor a bountiful literary buffet." — Booklist, Starred Review

"A leisurely stroll with a knowledgeable but unpretentious companion through some very interesting aisles." — Kirkus Reviews

Steinbeck's Ghost

Steinbeck's Ghost - It's been two months since Travis's family moved to a development so new that it seems totally unreal. His parents are working harder now, to pay for it all, and Travis is left to fend for himself.

There's one place, though, where Travis can still connect with his old life: the Salinas library. Travis and his family used to go there together every Saturday, but now he bikes to it alone, re-reading his favorite books.

It's only natural that Travis likes the work of author John Steinbeck-after all, Salinas is Steinbeck's hometown. But that can't explain why Travis is suddenly seeing Steinbeck's characters spring to life. There's the homeless man in the alley behind the library, the line of figures at the top of a nearby ridge, the boy who writes by night in an attic bedroom. Travis has met them all before-as a reader. But why are they here now? And how?

"...the story remains an intriguing introduction/companion to Steinbeck's works and imaginatively conveys the power of literature to transport people to another time and place." — Publishers Weekly

"...Buzbee's love for literature and libraries is infectious and, for those similarly inclined, deeply satisfying." — Booklist

"Magical realism with Steinbeck's ghost and a discerning young hero." — Kirkus Reviews
